Local golfers battle in annual Winthrop Club Championship

Forty eight members played in the Winthrop Golf Club qualifying rounds held September 8 through 10. N. E. Kellenberger was medalist with a 72 gross, the best amateur score on the local links, with S. D. McCallum runner up at 77. The top 16 gross scorers advance to Class A for the club championship.

Winthrop Interclub Bowling League Annual Meeting

Bowling enthusiasts are urged to attend the Winthrop Interclub Bowling League annual meeting on Friday evening September 23 at the Odd Fellows Alleys. Officers will be elected and the season schedule planned, with all organizations urged to be represented.

Edward L. Lane and Everett H. Lane twin sons of Judge P J Lane of East Boston Court are admitted to the Massachusetts bar after graduating from Harvard Law School last June. The Lane twins, members of the national fencing championship team, helped bring the intercollegiate fencing title to Harvard. Edward holds the New England championship, Everett held it last year. Both are 23 and reside with their parents.

Town awards note to Beacon Trust for 30000 dollars

Last Monday evening the Board of Selectmen awarded a note for 30000 dollars to the Beacon Trust Company of Boston at 3 1 percent interest. The note, payable December 16 1927, is in anticipation of revenue.

Winthrop Boy Makes Large Rum Seizure

Boatswain R S Tewksbury, a former Winthrop boy, led a Biloxi Mississippi seize of over 7000 gallons of Cuban alcohol and two large gasoline luggers, with six prisoners taken. He recently transferred to Base 15 and was in charge of CG 130 at the time.

Winthrop Interclub Regatta Draws 59 Boats

On Labor Day, 59 boats started the first annual three day regatta of the Winthrop Interclub Racing Association. Ideal sailing weather and a strong turnout made Winthrop Bay teem with yachts as crews raced along the weather rail in Sunday heats.

Opening of town public schools marks record enrollment

Last week saw the town’s public schools begin enrollment with 3204 pupils on September 12 surpassing last year’s 3014. Superintendent Edward R. Clarke began duties, and Frederic C. Loomis became High School Principal. Junior High enrollments led, with 473 pupils despite pending building completion.

Miss Margaret Bennett Elected to Banking Institute

Miss Margaret M. Bennett of 210 Somerset Avenue is appointed to the Women’s Committee of the Boston Chapter American Institute of Banking. She will serve as publicity agent for the Committee while remaining with National Shawmut Bank of Boston. The article notes the institute’s 26 year origin from bank clerk classes growing into a nationwide organization of about 60,000 students.
