Labor Day Regatta Draws 206 Boats To Cottage Park Yacht Club

Boston Harbor yachtsmen head to Winthrop for a three day Labor Day regatta hosted by Cottage Park Y C and Winthrop clubs. A 206-boat fleet across 20 classes competes after dredging improvements. Open house all days, dancing, concerts, and a Master Chevrolet Coach prize planned.

Local Schools Set to Open Wednesday Amid Vaccination Check

Local public schools will reopen next Wednesday September 9 with projected enrollment higher than last year. Highlands school opens 8 30 a mEdward B Newton and Center Schools start 8 45 a m Shirley Street pupils move to Highlands at 1 p m for reconstruction, birth and vaccination certificates required for new entrants, while transfer students must bring credentials. Senior and Junior High schools also resume sessions.

Local voters show little enthusiasm as September 15 looms for main offices, with many viewing balloting as a ratification. One or two contests for Senator and Representative may draw attention if campaigns gain momentum before election day.

Funeral Rites For Mrs Mary E Edwards

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary E. Edwards wife of George C Edwards of 35 Hermon were held Thursday at St John’s Episcopal Church with Rev Ralph M Harper officiating and Edward MacFarland and Louis MacCartney as altar boys. Mrs Edwards born in Launceston Tasmania on September 13 1860 had long resided in town and was cherished for her kindness and gentle disposition. The couple founded the Church of St Adens and left Australia in 1895.

Local Flower Show Attracts Broad Interest In Ellis Hall

The Garden Club of the Winthrop Woman's Club hosts a two day flower show in Ellis Hall on September 11 and 12. Open to all Winthrop residents who grow their own blooms exhibitors may enter multiple classes with limits per class. Entries open at 8 am Friday. no entrants after 10:30 am. Special awards include National Garden Bureau Bronze Medals from the Boston Herald.
