Captain Hodgkins to Retire After Long Boston Harbor Service

Capt A L Hodgkins of 2 Edgar terrace Winthrop retires at age 70 on December 31 as master of the Gen Robert Anderson. A veteran sea captain, he has long commanded in Boston Harbor and the Boston Navy of the United States Army. He recalls wrecks and near death while describing a January incident near Watch Hill.

Bleachers Expanded at Miller Field for Revere Winthrop Classic

Park Department chairman Car Wheeler and Supt. Art Floyd oversaw moving 2500 seat bleachers to field ends and adding Salem supplied stands. The total capacity reached about 5000 for Thanksgiving Day, with crews working evenings to finish. The field remained in good condition as a capacity crowd gathered for the Revere Winthrop classic.

The 28th annual meeting and banquet of the Hood and Sons Mutual Benefit Association was held at the Hotel Statler on Wednesday evening November 20 with more than 2000 members in attendance. Gilbert Hood president spoke on organizational growth while Harvey Hood, 2d, vice conducted proceedings.

Dr Vernon L Briggs to Speak at Wirthrop Meeting

The Wirthrop Improvement and Historical Association will host Dr Vernon L Briggs as guest speaker at the December 3 meeting at the Bane. A home cooked supper under Mrs M Grace Pettingell will precede the program with entertainment by Mrs Loni Sampson and music directed by Mr Carl Malley.

Committee Studies Shirley Street School House Additions

The Shirley Street school house committee studies proposed additions with plans and estimates after a special town meeting. A February report is expected to secure detailed plans and specifications for spring work and fall occupancy. WPA Projects Hire 200 Local Workers in Winthrop

WPA Assistant Administrator Theodore C. Naedele reports about 200 local citizens employed on WPA projects in Winthrop and hopes to place about 350 men at work before the week ends. Four WPA projects have been approved for the town.

Winthrop High Eyes 21 of 25 Squad A for Next Season

Coach Bob Perry plans to field 21 of the 25 men on the Winthrop High football squad for the 1936 season after the holiday close of a moderately successful year. Howie Freeman, elected co captain, leads an experienced squad with strong passing and rushing threats, aided by brothers Hershon Freeman and Aldo Carnicelli.
