Winthrop to Get 37900 for Civil Works Project

Winthrop will receive 37900 under the Federal Civil Works program to employ about 175 residents from now through February 15. The project covers replacing 4 inch water mains with 6 inch lines and laying new 1 and 12 inch mains, with labor costs totaled at 30100 and materials 9500 funded by federal and town sources. The work will be supervised under Howard P. Shattuck with government contracts for labor and payments via government checks.

A large audience of women greeted John L. Iey, special assistant to the U.S. district attorney, as he spoke on the Constitution. Speakers argued Congress and the executive have granted broad powers, with the Supreme Court to rule on constitutionality. The district includes Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Puerto Rico. the event praised Americans first and Republicans longtime unity under the president.

Town Meeting Set for December 4 at Junior High

A special town meeting is planned for Monday evening December 4 at the Junior High School. Voters will consider articles in the warrant for further appropriations for local welfare and soldiers relief.

Funeral Services for Local Veteran First Sergeant Albert M Abbott

First Sergeant Albert M Abbott retired US Marine Corps veteran died last Thursday at the Marine Hospital Chelsea and was buried with full military honors. Services were at St John’s Episcopal Church with Rev R M Harper and interment at Winthrop Cemetery. Abbott served 30 years in the Marines, 20 active, and was active in local veterans groups. Survived by wife and two sons.
