A northeast gale of 40 to 60 mph battered Winthrop and nearby Atlantic coast towns over Saturday to Monday. High tides 8.9 feet flooded cellars and streets, with waves and sand washing Shore Drive and Shirley Point. officials cleared debris and aided stalled cars while breakwaters helped protect walls.

Town Pays $69,000 More Than It Gets In

Town Treasurer Aiken reported a state town exchange on Wednesday showing the state paid the town 40,179.58 while the town remitted 199,863.67 to the state, leaving a net balance in the state’s favor of 69,084.09. The 1935 state tax against the town totaled 37,000.00, higher than 1934, and the town’s share of the 1934 state income tax returned 30,649.00 to the local treasury.

Thanksgiving Church Service Set For Union Congregational

The annual community Thanksgiving service will be held Wednesday evening November 27 at the Union Congregational Church with Rev Harry Belmont Hill of the First Methodist Church as preacher. Rev Ralph M Harper rector of St Johns Episcopal Church and Rev Lewis Williamson pastor of the First Baptist Church will lead the service. The Union Congregational choir will sing a Thanksgiving anthem and the Day hymn will be used again. Offertory will support the Whithrop Visiting Nurse Association.

Distinguished Service Cross Awarded to Dick White

Former Winthrop resident Richard Dick White of Company H 11th Infantry 26th Division earned the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism near Vaux France in July 1918.
