Gymnasium classes begin November 17 at the Junior High School gymnasium under the Non-Partisan League plan. Open to all town men over 21 with no instruction charge. The program aims to provide safe organized athletic activity. approved by the Winthrop School Committee. Continued on next page.
Registrar Ryan was guest speaker at the Wintheop Improvement and Historical Association monthly supper meeting. He discussed automations, highways, and related departmental work, receiving applause for his resume of the department’s efforts. A group performed saxophone pieces by Charles Bauer with Carl Malley accompanying.
Five speakers will address a Non-Partisan League meeting next Tuesday evening. Winthrop School Committee and Superintendent of Schools will appear as guest speakers before Young Heoigs as part of the educational division of the Town Wall event.
Winthrop High football begins a three game home stretch this Saturday at Ingle side Park hosting Chelsea High. After six games Winthrop stands three wins, two losses, one tie with victories over Brookline Watertown and Swampscott and a Melrose loss. Captain Dick Kelly was out injured against Melrose, limiting the attack.
The Young People's Fellowship announces that this Sunday evening Anthony O. Shallin director of the Bar Association of Cambridge will speak on The Nations and the World Court. Ample opportunity for questions from the floor. The meeting in the Parish House of St. John's Episcopal Church at seven. Open to all young people and adults.
A testimonial dinner will be held Monday evening at the Cliff House to honor retired police officers Jack Douglas and Bean Howarth. Local citizens and guests will attend as a limited number of tickets are issued, with Highlands Hotel expected to be crowded by well wishers and supporters.
At the regular month meeting of the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association on Tuesday evening in the Barn, members adopted a resolution on the death of Miss Anna Newton native Comevalued member from the early days. The resolution honors her twenty years as chairman of the house committee and loyalty to Deane Winthrop House. It expresses heartfelt sympathy to her relatives and directs the resolution be recorded and sent to Mrs Clara Newton and local newspapers. November 7, 1933.
The town announces an adjourned meeting Tuesday evening November 14 at 8 p m in the Junior High School gym. It continues the October 10 vote on Federal recovery act loan projects and may require further votes to close the proceedings. Members urged to attend promptly.
The American Red Cross Winthrop Chapter invites citizens to join the annual Roll Call from Armistice Day to Thanksgiving Day. Local workers including Mrs Do Cogan chairman and Miss Annie Barrett will call at homes in Precinct One to seek support for humanitarian relief and community aid.
Preston B Churchill treasurer of the Unemployment Committee reports receipts through November 7 totaling 450.08, mainly from private citizens in response to October letters. The executive committee plans Thanksgiving basket distributions and coal aid as cold weather prompts more requests. Funds are sought from churches and local societies to start active relief work.
A horse escaped its handler Monday night and led Winthrop police on a lengthy chase before wandering onto a Narrow Gauge trestle near Thornton station and was struck by an inbound train. Police and residents feared casualties as word spread until the animal was confirmed killed.
