At a State House meeting in Boston on Tuesday before the Committee Investigating the Old Colony railroad situation, selectmen admitted they have no transportation solution. A separate meeting was extended to Winthrop town officials to hear about the narrow gauge railroad issue.
Winthrop’s Red Cross chapter runs a volunteer dental clinic costing 700 dollars and treated 600 children last year. The chapter, led by Mrs. Carl Floyd, also offers life saving and first aid courses, disaster planning, and delivers clothing, food, medicine, glasses, and transport to Boston hospitals. All donations stay in Winthrop, funded by Armistice Day to Thanksgiving Roll Call.
The Winthrop Circle reports success at Florence Crittenton League Bazaar at Copley Plaza, Boston. Mrs. Ralph S. Woollett thanks members for contributions. Hurricane lamps won by Mrs. George E. Miller of Charlestown Navy Yard. Mrs. Joseph F. O'Hern wore lime green crepe dress with matching hat in the Fashion Show.
On Armistice Day Saturday at 8:00 a.m. a mass for peace will be celebrated at the Church of St. John the Evangelist. Parishioners are urged to attend and join in spiritual supplication for world peace.
The Winthrop Public Library hosts a Book Week display from November 13 to 18 featuring new children and young adult books. The exhibit highlights stories from many countries aligned with this year’s Books Around the World theme.
Charles A Alfred Roberts longtime Winthrop resident and retired railroad fireman and motorman died Tuesday after a brief illness at his home. He was born in East Boston and lived in Winthrop since age two. funeral Friday at St John s Episcopal Church. He leaves wife Jane two sons Lawrence and Hugh and two sisters Emily Keene and Ann Roberts. Interment Winthrop Cemetery.
Bishop Henry K Sherrill has urged the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts to designate Armistice Day as a Day of Prayer for world peace. A Holy Communion service will be held at St John s Church Saturday at eight with the church open all day for personal prayer and meditation.
The Winthrop Red Cross will open a six precinct roll call drive aiming for 1940 members with targets of 400 450 350 350 300 per precinct and 100 from individual gifts. W A Hodgkins leads the effort as officials plan a town wide canvass through Thanksgiving. opening speakers Arthur E Boudreau and Ernest Bentley unveil the drive at local theatres.
