Town meeting in the Hearing Room at Winthrop Town Hall officially approved participation in the 1930 Tercentenary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. F. K. Hatfield chairs the planning, aiming to place Winthrop among the foremost in state and national commemorations.
Police report Halloween night unusually calm with many youths on streets in good humor. Band stand at Ingleside Park damaged and several car tires aired. overall losses minor as bad weather kept mischief down. Youths expected to make restitution for band stand damage.
The Board of Selectmen will hold its weekly meeting this Friday evening due to Armistice Day observance on Monday November 11.
Frederick H. Clark, commander of Winthrop Post No 146 American Legion, calls merchants and business men of Winthrop to cooperate in observing Armistice Day on Monday November 11 1918 to honor the supreme sacrifice of departed comrades and remind citizens of the cessation of hostilities in World War I.
Winthrop Post No. 146 and its Drum and Bugle Corps will join the Armistice Day parade in Boston Monday at 9 30 a m The Drum Corps and Post meet at the Dugout at 8 00 a m in uniform before departure for Boston.
Nine automobile accidents occurred in October with injuries in four crashes. Precincts 1 2 and 3 each logged three accidents while precinct 4 had none. Four accidents were corner crashes and five were not. Damage occurred in all but two crashes. The Winthrop Branch of the Governors Committee on Street and Highway Safety monitors the town with police cooperation to reduce accidents.
The P O Department inspected the old Town Hall site in Winthrop for a potential Post Office. Inspectors reviewed the site and asked for measurements while plans for widening the area were outlined. A subsequent visit to Malden checked a recently completed Post Office owned by the department.
Members of the Winthrop Board of Health are revising a new set of rules and regulations governing health measures for the town. They will incorporate old rules from 1924 and add new ones to modernize the by laws. The updated regulations are planned to take effect early next year.
Winthrop First Church of the Methodist Episcopal plans a three service day Sunday November 10 to mark the cornerstone laying. Bishop William F Anderson will officiate at 3 pm in Metcalf Square with Rev Edward A Elliott preaching morning and Rev Charles S Otto delivering the evening sermon. Over sixty invitations were issued to former pastors and town officials with local photographers expected to record the historic event.
The town warns all heavy truck drivers that backing onto granolithic sidewalks to unload is illegal. Police will arrest violators and prosecute both the driver and company. permission from police is required before any sidewalk backing to avoid penalties and sidewalk repairs.
Citizens petition for a special town meeting to review the Selectmen action granting a Sunday movie permit. Rev. Wm. J. Day led protests citing lack of public hearing and alleged one sided handling of the decision. The Board argued the permit satisfied general demand and acted accordingly.
Winthrop Post 146 of the American Legion plans its Armistice night military ball on November 11. The event features a grand march, a presentation to Gold Star Mothers of a Massachusetts prepared book, and a fully arranged program with committees led by Alfred F. Silberberg and others.
Mrs William Rupp and family have moved from Ingleside Avenue and are now living on Shore Drive updating local residents on their address change.
