At a Monday meeting the Advisory Committee approved a transfer of 500 to the town solicitor's department for legal and other advice on transportation matters. The Board of Selectmen had previously requested 1500 for the same purpose. Selectmen Batchelder and Belcher attended, while Chairman Baker withdrew early.
Several vacancies exist in the Quar termaster Corps United States Army at Fort Banks Winthrop Mass Applicants must be of good character and over 18 years of age Those accepted for enlistments will be trained as clerks warehousemen plumbers motor vehicle operators bakers stock clerks and countermen Interested should apply to Major Harry C Snyder Quartermaster Corps.
The Winthrop Playmakers opened the season with George and Margaret, staged in Odd Fellows Hall under Louis Sheehan. The three act comedy drew praise for strong performance by Dawn Hagman Hazel Monroe Mildred Swartz Ruth Shorley Arthur Verney Clayton Nash Ross Gilchrist and Harvey Grant ahead of The Ghost Train in January.
Boston Revere Beach and Lynn railroad reports a net loss of 36383 for the quarter ending September and a nine month loss of 151919, both higher than the same periods last year. The quarterly loss exceeds last year's by about 3000 and nine month figures rise by roughly 12000.
Rain and wind did not deter nearly 1000 children at Winthrop High School gym for the first annual Hallowe'en party of the Winthrop Police Association. Programs featured ventriloquism, drum corps selections, magic by Hans Kleeman, ice cream, prizes, and costumed youngsters from witches to Mickey Mouse.
Mr. Sterling H Poole will lecture on and exhibit gourds at the annual Guest Day of the Garden Club of the Winthrop Woman's Club on November 6. A reception for guests at 12:00 p m precedes a 1:00 p m dessert luncheon. The executive board hosts. roll call focuses on State Flowers and Chrysanthemums.
A hearing is set for November 9 before the Department of Public Utilities at the State House Boston. Officials of the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn railroad and bondholders’ counsel will seek permission to cease operation over the whole system.
St. John's Guild met in the Parish House on Wednesday October 25 at two o clock. The Rt Rev Winifred H Ziegler missionary bishop of Wyoming spoke about his vast mission district covering 100000 square miles serving Arapahoe and Shoshone Indians and pioneer settlers. He highlighted Eden Wyoming a log church on the Oregon Trail connected to Ralph Wellington. The address offered an uplifting view of a challenging region.
The Salvation Army in New England and the Metropolitan Division thank Winthrop for meeting its $500 quota for the Annual Maintenance Appeal. Lead supporters include Colonel Edmund C. Hoffman and An drex S. Seiler, praising Chairman John E. Murray and the sponsoring committee for their hard work.
Sixty three members and friends of the Winthrop Circle of the Florence Crittenton League toured Towle Manufacturing in Newburyport on Wednesday Oct 25. They were lectured on the silver plant’s history from Paul Revere to the showroom and guided through the mine to show room processes in groups of eight. The group enjoyed fine weather and a served meal during the visit.
Mardocheo Saggese of 68 Read Street was appointed a regular patrolman Tuesday by the Selectmen to fill the police vacancy created by the retirement of Patrolman James J. Turner of 145 Hermon Street.
The Winthrop American Red Cross held its annual meeting at the Methodist Church with over 150 attending a supper by Mrs. Harvey Sleeger’s group. Walter Davidson of Washington D C spoke as guest, while local officials pledged support and plans for Roll Call were outlined.
