More than two hundred officials workers and guests attended the opening dinner of the Boy Scout Campaign at Winthrop Senior High School gym. The drive aims to raise $2000 to support Scouting locally with strong citizen interest and cooperation evident throughout the event. Continued on page 8.
Congress faces a bill to retire all postal workers with 30 years service. Local Postmaster David Belcher and three clerks plus five letter carriers would be retired July 1 if enacted. Affected include Clerks William Burke William Benson Samuel Patchett and carriers F E Corbett W A Grimes D Belcher J Keefe and W A Vath. Belcher appointed June 26 1908 has served continuously and earned praise for local organization.
Patrick W. Barry state president of the Legion Fathers Club spoke at Amesbury Post 178 American Legion meeting to organize a Fathers Club. George W. Cay ham and H. Fielding assisted as local officials. Barry praised World War veterans and plans for the new club were outlined.
The Winthrop Daughters of Maine held their annual luncheon at Beacon Villa on Wednesday May 3. Members gathered at 1 pm in a dining hall decorated with May baskets and forsythia. The president Mrs Joseph F Shepherd received a spring bouquet from afternoon chair Mrs Howard E Spencer and gifts of gold were presented to Mrs Harry Wharf fi for her generous support of club programs.
Residents of Precinct 5 signed a petition to the Selectmen urging immediate safety work at the Pico and Sunny Side Avenue beach. They request removal of jagged telephones, rocks, and boulders, gravel and sand spreading for a safe approach, and a timber ramp about 100 feet seaward. They propose leveling the beach to accommodate growing bathers and suggest using unskilled labor from park or highway departments without extra funds.
The Winthrop Boy Scout Fund Campaign Committee chaired by Edward R. Clarke has received word from John J. Collins of the Richard Metcalf Post No. of the Veterans of Foreign Wars that the Post will stage an entertainment at Post Headquarters 66 Shore Drive to benefit the Scout Fund.
The Winthrop Firemen's Relief Association held its annual meeting at the Central Fire Station after a dinner. Over 40 members attended with invited guests Chief Warren H. Belcher and assistants. New president John We Flanagan received the gavel from retiring president ET Roach, and officers and trustees were elected including Henry E. Keough and Ey Belcher.
The Winthrop Woman's Club held its annual meeting at Ellis' Hall on Friday May 5 1938 with 200 guests and members in attendance. A luncheon featuring chicken patties lobster salad and iced treats was served by Hicks the caterer. President Mrs May M H Salerno led the 215 pm business session as secretaries read reports including thanks for Red Cross and Dental Clinic donations.
Winthrop Post No. 146 American Legion outlines plans for the July Fourth Carnival with Commander George Downie as general chairman. The post also aims to stage another County Fair, supports the Boy Scout Fund drive, and holds a members’ meeting at the Post Headquarters to interview prospects for the fund event.

Winthrop Elks plan annual Flag Day exercises inviting mc organizations to participate. The parade starts at the Elks Club House on Washington Avenue at 6 30, with music prominent and a noted speaker expected. All Elks urged to support the event and Boy Scout drive.
Senator Frank B. Crowley of Chelsea represents the 1st District and spoke to a large Winthrop Kiwanis gathering at the Winthrop Arms Hotel on Tuesday evening. He announced that work will begin soon on the Winthrop Beach breakwater, with President John Canavan presiding.
Past Masters Night was held with ceremonies in the Masonic Apartments by Winthrop Lodge A F & A M. Past Master Gorham H Walker presided and Charles G Bird acted as marshal. A gathering of past Masters attended and a supper was served at 6 20 with Judge Elijah Adlow of the Superior Court as speaker.
A bridge party hosted by Winthrop Community Hospital nurses in Ellis Hall Tuesday evening raised a substantial amount. More than 400 attended, with Miss Marion Friz yey, superintendent, serving as committee chair.
Patrolman Channing F MacDonald a World War veteran and popular member of the local police force died suddenly at 7 Atlantic Street from a heart clot. He was 33, appointed February 29, 1928, and survived by his wife and three children. Funeral arrangements not yet set.
James H. Crowley of East Boston, longtime assistant director of physical education for Boston Public Schools, completes 25 years of service spanning elementary to high school levels. Appointed in May 1998 as athletic coach and instructor at the High School of Commerce, Crowley has guided thousands of students over a quarter century.
Selectman Leonard C. Atkinson will be honored at a testimonial banquet and reception at the Winthrop Yacht Club tonight. Dinner is at 6 30 followed by entertainment. guests include Senator Frank D. Crowley and Representative Kimiet shomenate other Bogard selectmen and local leaders. Harold Osborne chairs the committee.
