Sunday evening's screening of The World War at the Winthrop Theatre, presented by Winthrop Post No 146 American Legion, drew a full house. The debut public appearance of the Post's new Drum and Bugle Corps showcased a well organized, high quality program with strong audience turnout.
Arthur M. McCarthy of Winthrop asks residents to consider criticism of Winthrop as a home and cites vacant apartments. He plans to place the issue before citizens to address whether the town should counter unfavorable outside views.
Plans submitted by Selectman Tibbetts to widen Reverent Street await approval from Washington officials. Reverent Street, a busy yet narrow artery, currently ranges from 28 to 40 feet, hindering automobile traffic and raising safety concerns. The project, if approved, would markedly improve width and traffic flow in the near future.
Metcalf Square will be transformed by Suburban Gas and Electric Company with overhead wires underground. Streets affected include Winthrop from Jefferson to George and Hermon to School, and Pauline to the fire station. World War Memorial lighting under review. concrete sidewalk replacing tar on Winthrop Street near the Post Office.
The Winthrop Board of Trade will hold a regular meeting on Tuesday evening May 7 to approve a twice monthly schedule. Frank W. Tucker will discuss taxation as it affects local merchants, with committee reports on last meeting actions. The Vigilance Committee plans to improve town cleanliness in cooperation with selectmen and the Board of Health and two members per section will inspect for rubbish and dirt.
The Board of Selectmen awarded the street construction contract to F. F. McCarthy of Revere for 23100 dollars. He was the lowest of nine bidders. the highest bid reached 28750. The project includes 2000 cubic yards of excavation and multiple macadam and tar and gravel road sections, plus resetting 50 manholes.
The demolition of the old Town Hall is planned to begin at one. The Board of Selectmen approved the contract on Monday evening after authorization at the Annual Town Meeting. The warrant article directed tearing down and removing the building.
Frank A. Douglas longtime Winthrop public schools superintendent is laid to rest after a 31 year tenure. He died in Cleveland last Thursday and his funeral procession returned to Boston area. His wake at Bennison Undertaking and viewing at Masonic Temple drew large crowds with eight senior high school guards of honor.
A meeting of the Memorial Day Committee, appointed by the Selectmen, named Milton C. Rogers of the Machine Gun Veterans Association as Chief Marshal for this year s observances. He will appoint his staff to run the program and plans for Memorial Day and the preceding Sunday.
After the Board of Selectmen meeting, it was announced that no building or set-back line will be placed on Jefferson street due to current conditions. A building line will be set on Winthrop street, one and a half stories from Jefferson to Pauline, and plans include rounding the Jefferson and Winthrop corner to ease the narrow turn. Jefferson street remains one way, deemed sufficient for traffic.
Considerable opposition to House Bill 1249 was voiced at a Monday public hearing of the Legislative Committee on Public Health in Room 443 at the State House. The measure would authorize the Tubercular Hospital District of Winthrop Chelsea and Revere to contract with Middlesex County to hospitalize tubercular patients and let Middlesex County raise its hospital expansion to 1 600 000. The District would need to contribute 350 000 for a 50‑bed addition. Chairman Henry J. Barry and other district officials spoke against the draft contract, urging amendments to address terms not approved by the District’s Board.
Winthrop progress on a new Post Office remains unclear while Congressman Charles L. Underhill and the Board of Selectmen discussed the issue at a recent conference. Underhill signaled good prospects if residents desire the project, but details await higher authority approval in Washington. A committee also reviewed disposing of the old Town Hall site in connection with the American Legion request.
