The census will extend to twenty four questions per household. Data will aid private business and social inquiries, covering relationship, home ownership, finances, radio ownership, education, literacy, birthplaces, language, immigration, naturalization, occupation, industry, work status, and veteran service.
Chairman Tibbetts orders police to inspect stores with emphasis on yards and cellars to remove rubbish. Streets will be kept clear by Mahaney’s Saturday cleanups, with failure to cooperate leading to court action. An investigator will seek storekeeper cooperation to maintain front and rear areas.
Friends of former Selectman Henry J Barry report slow recovery from recent illness. He sat up briefly on Wednesday and remains bed bound. Officials say full recovery is a matter of time with continued rest.
Town officials study dividing Precinct 2 to balance voters across five precincts. Current counts put Precinct 2 well above Precinct 4, with 1501 more voters than the latter, raising questions of ballot counting efficiency and possible reforms.
Town Clerk Bessie L. Dodge warns Winthrop dog owners to license pets by March 31 to avoid fines up to 315.00 under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 140. Notices posted townwide. few owners have yet to comply.
Ninety residents have answered the Board of Trustees appeal to wipe out the Winthrop Community Hospital indebtedness. The goal is 9800 to cover deficits from several years. Trustees had pledged only Build of 1925 to 1928 funds and list sponsors including Alfred J. Pilling Dr H. E. Bragdon Frederick J. Muldoon and Chas H Whit.
E. W. Billman of the Boston Chamber of Commerce outlined duties of a Board of Trade and urged merchants to unite, improve the town, and push constructive ideas to officials. A letter from Chairman Tibbetts promised 100 percent cooperation of the Board of Selectmen.
Chairman Tibbetts urges Metropolitan District Commission to build a series of jetties along Winthrop Shore Drive to cushion storms. Legislation has considered roughly eight million dollars in funding, but proponents argue jetties would cost far less and reduce wave impact before reaching the sea wall.
Chairman Tibbetts proposes police protection at school street crossings next year and weighs whether current staff can handle it without raising Police Department personnel. He notes three officers are on duty during the day and expects parent support.
Chairman Tibbetts reports Congressman's telegram: House acted on a bill granting Winthrop a perpetual right of way over Fort Banks Military Reservation to widen Revere Street to fifty feet. Senate approval expected with little difficulty. Underhill notes final plans for Winthrop Post Office and bids for construction soon requested.
A young bandit fired at Hyman Felvis owner of a hardware store at Crest avenue Winthrop Highlands Saturday night, wounding nothing but the chair. Samuel White grocer at Crest avenue reported the youth fled in a small car toward East Boston, with an accomplice nearby. Police describe the assailant as an amateur robber who lost nerve.
The Winthrop Street Department moved quickly after the town approved street appropriations on Monday evening. Early Tuesday four large pea stone filled trucks arrived for street work, indicating Superintendent Mahaney’s team is on the job and work began the same day.
Winthrop citizens approve a 1930 municipal budget of 777250.23 with 705140.50 warrants discharged. Roads get 74432, Fire 39170, Police 39636, and schools 283449. A new truck 4500 and a patrol ambulance 2000 funded. The playground study at Point Shirley to report in 60 days with 300 for surveys. Electric Light Committee named. Planning Board members named. thanks extended to two long-serving planners. Article 51 deferred regarding Spanish War Veterans building expansion.
A public hearing at the State House reviewed a permit to establish a lobster business at Point Shirley near the former Point Shirley Club. The hearing was continued to April 2 and discussed zoning steps before land reclassification. Chairman Tibbetts represented Winthrop at the session.
