Red Cross Emphasizes Local Role At March Meeting
At the March 10 meeting of the Winthrop Red Cross Executive Committee held at the Ed R Newton School Mrs Carl Floyd presiding Dr B H Metcalf chairs the Emergency Committee which reported urgent calls and valued aid from volunteers. The group assisted afflicted families, prepared food for children, and helped transport critical cases with ambulances in support of the Winthrop Visiting Nurse Association.

Memorial tablet sought for WWI fallen by Special Aid Society
In 1919 the Public Library meeting room heard the Special Aid Society vote to start a memorial fund with 100 dollars for the boys who did not return from war. After town meeting delays the committee resumed work to erect a tablet and later a possible memorial building, with donations gratefully acknowledged by treasurer Mrs. Mabble R. Radell. Contributors include Special Aid Society 100, Mrs. Mabel M. Furber 5, Louis A. Radell 5, Quest & Question Club 5, Mrs. Lillian B. Hess 2, Winthrop Daughters of Maine 10.

Two House Fires on Shirley Street Endanger Neighbors
Last Sunday morning the fire alarm for 387 Shirley St summoned box 18. Firemen quickly contained a blaze later that afternoon and again four hours later in the same house amid high winds. Four occupants were affected by the evacuations. the loss is estimated at about $4500, the building owned by Ovid LaFleur.
