A new air raid precaution class will start next Monday evening March 23 at Shirley Street School. Open to all town residents, the course will be taught by local school teachers and continues March 25 27 31 with first aid instruction to follow on April 6 10 13 and 15 after completion. Registration will be held next Monday evening.
Residents of Precinct 5 may lack protection in emergencies unless they volunteer for the Rescue and Demolition Committee led by George W. Walsh. Five squads are planned for the town, with Precinct 5 seeking volunteers to form a rescue team. Contact Walsh at 21 James Ave or Ocean 2445 to offer service.
Chairman Wm Moran seeks volunteers for the Gas and Decontamination Committee and Chairman John Dimento seeks volunteers for the Bomb Committee. Service is not more dangerous than other civilian defense tasks and training will be provided. Gas committee members will post areas of gas, spray to neutralize it with proper gear. Bomb committee will rope off areas and alert residents. removal of unexploded bombs is handled by Army authorities.
G J Carlz of the First U S Regional Office of Civil Defense led a detailed air raid preparedness talk to a large audience at the Junior High School last Sunday afternoon. The demonstration used maps phones and lights to show the sequence from enemy aircraft detection to arrival and departure, with imagined control centers and local report center coordinating a smooth program. The public stayed after adjournment, eager to learn more.
Mr and Mrs Leslie E Griffin mark their 45th wedding anniversary with a family gathering and friends on Tuesday March 17, creating a memorable day for the couple and their community.
Major General Sherman Miles states the army is studying removing shore lights to protect post wise shipping. No decision yet on which lights to eliminate. Policy aims to minimize public and commercial disruption while preserving civilian beach and resort activities along the New England coast.
The first Nutrition class guided by the American Red Cross in Winthrop will graduate on Thursday, March 19. Women in this class may qualify for the canteen management course starting in April. A second Thursday morning nutrition class will begin soon with a few vacancies. Registration is with Mrs. Wendell A. Hopkins, Ocean 0225.
The annual town meeting approved 27 of 49 warrant items with 5 percent raises for eight teachers added after debate. It upheld the advisory panel on 35 000 for incidental costs but approved 300 for convention expenses and 100 as urged by the committee. Additional appropriations included 1000 for golf land upkeep and 1500 Crescent street and 3100 Terrace avenue improvements, with a small turnout and James A. Herbert moderating efficiently.
Lt. Wells of the Winthrop Committee on Public Safety calls precinct chairs and unit leaders to collect and complete identification forms for all civilian defense volunteers. A State photographer will soon visit Winthrop to issue official state identification cards, but distribution awaits full information. Forms available from Lt. Wells at the police station.
A Winthrop group of business men started a credit bureau intended for all merchants and professionals. Two meetings have been held and the organization plans are underway. Contact Allen's Market Ocean 1673 or other listed local merchants for information.
Town elevates 41 residents as auxiliary police under Chief Pumphret and Richard K. Griffin who will chair. Recipients include Baker 15 Seymour Street, Beattie 116 Highland Avenue, Belliveau 68 Read Street, Benson 11 Lewister, and many others listed by name and address.
A Friday meeting in Winthrop gym drew over 900 wardens first aid workers auxiliary police and firemen to outline the civilian defense setup. John W. Fielding led the session focusing on vigilance and readiness through war end with praise for local teachers and utilities experts.
Audited figures show Winthrop at 150 percent of its $6,633.55 quota with 1 381 contributors, part of a 104 percent Metropolitan Division total toward the $7.6 million Greater Boston United War Fund. George J. Hamilton commends Winthrop workers and the Red Cross Chapter for standout effort.
Belmont state official Joseph E Perry the state bank commissioner and former grand master of Massachusetts masons will speak at the Laymen's Service of the First Church of Winthrop on Sunday at 11:00 AM. The Winthrop Lodge A F and AM will attend. Dr John L Ivey of Dorchester will preach at 7:30 PM followed by Dr Otto’s visit last week.
The recount held Wednesday evening produced no change in the election of candidates. George Hamilton narrowed Roy W. Pigeon’s lead by 27 votes in the selectmen contest but did not win. James A. Herbert, originally elected moderator, gained votes over Joseph E. Davison, who was defeated.
