Representative D. J. Honan announces the defeat of several Suffolk County bills seeking to create a separate Boston county and to apportion Suffolk County expenses among Winthrop Chelsea and Revere. The defeat marks a local victory for these communities for another year.
John Ohlson of Winthrop will perform a principal Carmen role at the Majestic Theatre in Boston next week. The production is presented by the Federal Music Project under the Works Progress Administration sponsorship.
Edward F Sullivan a Democrat of Bates avenue was re appointed to the Board of Registrars at the weekly Board of Selectmen meeting. His term expired in March marking his eighth term and his 24 years of service to the town in this capacity.
The Popular Authors Literary Club at Beacon Villa heard a talk by Clyde J. Heath on winter sports from Lake Placid to St Moritz with moving pictures. The session included reports on the Massachusetts State Federation of Women's Clubs mid winter conference and the Motion Picture Council. Donations were noted for American International College and Girl Scouts Council. The next meeting is March 16 at Mrs Gen evieve K Price 100 Circuit road with a program of poetic readings and music.
William O'Brien of 120 Hermon street Winthrop will perform the role of a priest in the opera Carmen at the Majestic Theatre next week under the Federal Music Project of the Works Progress Administration.
More than 1500 people attended vesper services at First Church in Lynn to dedicate the Nelson W Kimball Memorial organ. Rev C Oscar Ford officiated with Bishop Wesley Burns preaching the dedicatory sermon. The rebuilt organ, originally installed in 1915 and rebuilt after a 1936 fire, honors late Nelson W Kimball and was funded by Mrs Ella A Kimball.
The Rangers met at Beacon Villa on March 4 with Mrs. Elizabeth A. Graham presiding. Letters from distant Rangers were read, the Astronomy Committee resumed planet studies, and a Venus article by Mrs. Mabel Finter followed by Earth by Florence Jennings. The Botany Committee studied the Composite Family with Ned Nellie Bacon on Edelweiss Dandelion and Marigold by Carrie Weston. Conservation notes by Mrs. Jeannette Greathead covered Boston port development and a notice on the possible sale of Calf Island and Brewster Island by the Federal Government drew concern as an entry to Boston Harbor.
Arthur C. Long of Winthrop Junior High School in the Commercial Department is named to the Tours Committee of the Eastern Commercial Teachers Association. The association plans its 40th Annual Convention March 24 25 26 27 1937 at the Hotel Statler Boston.
St John s Guild met in the Parish House on March 3 with Mrs Doris Marden introducing speaker Mrs Mona O Hern who led a mythical trip from New York to Havana Vera Cruz and Mexico City describing cathedrals pyramids gardens and Mexican crafts. The program included Mexican articles and Miss Phoebe Pierce in costume. refreshments followed. Events include March 8 open house at 145 River Road March 11 Corporate Communion and March 16 girls from Bishop Lee School performs three one act plays. tea on March 31 at 100 Circuit Road Easter Monday supper for Carpet Fund and a Demonstration Luncheon on April 6 at 192 Boylston Street Boston. The next Guild meeting is April 7 at 2 pm with Mrs Grace Patchett s group hosting.
Mrs. James A. Sweeney announced she will assume duties of her late husband at the Winthrop Real Estate Co located at 34 Woodside Avenue. She will be assisted by her son Ray Sweeney in managing the firm.
Over fifty members of the Radio Class Association attended the annual dinner at Pleasant Park Yacht Club on March 4 with Commodore Gordon Russell presiding. The Savin Hill Yacht Club has adopted the Radio Class and will launch four new boats this season, bringing the total to fifteen and promising lively contests this summer.
Annual town meeting in the Junior High gym will handle 37 articles. Debates likely on WPA and Ingleside Park appropriations, Elmwood Court as town way, Jewish War Veterans quarters, and police hire. Advisory tax rate set at 28 dollars per thousand. Ingleside Park construction and silt dust pose main issues. Meeting starts at 8 p.m. with public access urged.
The Winthrop Women's Republican Club held its March meeting at President Mrs. G Wallace Tibbetts home despite bad weather. Members voted to sign a Washington protest petition and to donate to a national pro test group. Speakers Mrs Elizabeth Pigeon East Boston and Mrs Sohier Welch Boston discussed national state election atmospherics and financial origins of money.
Funeral services were held Wednesday for David M. Gehrken one of three men lost in a harbor tragedy Saturday afternoon. Police recovered Arthur W. Knudson and Edward Drumgoole later, while a dory and junk salvage near Apple Island are cited in the incident.
The Winthrop Woman's Club met at Elk's Hall with Mrs. Wendell A. Hodgkins presiding. Reports were given by secretary and treasurer. Current Topics class plans a March 11 session with Mrs. Edward H. Fenton. Drama Class meets March 17 with Mrs. Harry W. Farquhar. Parliamentary Law Class convenes Wednesdays at Beacon Villa.
