Winthrop Lodge of Elks votes to award a perpetual Winthrop High School Cup for general excellence to the best class record each year starting with the 1921 graduates. The gift, proposed by Brendan Keenan and approved by Mr. Clarke and the school committee, aims to spur academic effort.
Firemen plan Memorial Day observances with graveside decorations and services. The Winthrop Firemen's Relief Association will meet at Central Fire Station at 9 a.m. then proceed to Winthrop Cemetery, decorate graves, and march to the Congregational Church on Tewksbury Street for a memorial service led by Rev. Thomas Street. Ex-members are invited.
The Winthrop Visiting Nurse Association announces its Annual Flower Day on Saturday June 11 1921. Flowers will be sold at all Winthrop railroad stations and public cooperation is sought.
Last Monday marked the 2434th anniversary and field day of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. The banquet at the Copley-Lasa ballroom drew over 660 attendees led by Winthrop figures including Clarence J. McKennie and Capt. Richmond G. Stoehr among others touring Boston and Winthrop.
Ward G Richardson and a long list of officers including Lieut D Albert Ives Lieut Ralph ig Goudy Major James A Winston Major Cotrell Col J F Howell and others are named in a military roster continued on page 5. The fragment preserves identity and rank details from the archived roll call.
Flag Day observances are planned for next Tuesday at the Elks hall to mark the 144th birthday of Old Glory. The article recalls Betsy Ross sewing the first flag in a Philadelphia house and notes the flag’s symbol of liberty and opportunity uniting diverse creeds and nationalities amid a period of American unrest.
