Waste Paper Drive Scheduled in Winthrop June 6
Winthrop residents are asked to gather scrap paper cartons and magazines for a waste paper drive on Tuesday June 6. Chairman George Hamilton of the Salvage Committee urges broad cooperation to make this the largest drive yet. Paper cartons and magazines should be sorted and tied in separate bundles for easy handling by town trucks. Bundles placed on front lawns or sidewalks for collection.

Thunderbolt pilots pursue and down FW 190 in England dogfight
Captain Ogden and Lt. Collins of the Eighth Air Force describe a complex aerial engagement over an English fighter station. Two P-47s chased a Focke Wulf while another FW pursued the Thunderbolts. Collins and Ogden exchanged fire, destroying the enemy aircraft in a furious melee that ended with one plane flaming into the ground. Both pilots, part of Lt. Col. Tukey's group, are decorated veterans with strong service records.

Winthrop veterans led a Memorial Day parade from Metcalf Square to the cemetery where graves were marked with flags and flowers. Dr. Emig gave the invocation, and Rev. Quinlan conducted the benediction as Edward J. Sullivan urged a lasting postwar peace. Pleasant Park Yacht Club paid tribute to Merchant Marine and Navy dead with Brig. Gen. Gage reviewing the ceremonies.
