Big Carnival of Winthrop Lodge of Elks

Charles Colton Seeks State Representative Nomination

Charles A Colton of 88 Circuit Rd files nomination papers in Winthrop to be a candidate for the General Court. He has long ties to Boston newspapers and credit associations, held leadership roles in Republican town politics, and serves as a director in the Retail Credit Men's Association of Boston. He has practiced law and held positions with the Winthrop Historical and Improvement Association and the Winthrop Public Library board.

Weenie Roast Hosted by Young Women Republicans

A Weenie roast was held last Saturday evening in the cellar play room at Mrs Pauline S Anderson's home on Dix Street. Twenty five persons attended despite bad weather. The event capped a regular summer feature of the club and the group plans to resume fall and winter activities in September.

Services Held For Train Victim John T. Leslie

John T. Leslie 48 of 169 Main St a printer and Winthrop police special officer was killed by a Narrow Gauge train between Centre and Ingalls stations last Saturday. He died instantly after stepping into the train’s path while walking toward Centre. Legion and fraternal members attended services at Richard H. White funeral home and St John’s Episcopal Church. Interment followed at Winthrop Cemetery. He left his widow Jennie V. Leslie.

The Winthrop fire department faced three false alarms early Tuesday, from box 312 at Revere street and Quincy Parkway to Magee's Corner. Firemen responded to each call, waking residents as pranksters stirred the town, with police patrolling afterward and no further alarms detected.

The Commodore's Club Inc held its annual dance at the Winthrop Yacht Club on Wednesday July 27 1938 at 830 p m. The event drew members from yacht ing circles across Massachusetts Bay with attendees arriving by boat. The club's membership is noted as unique for consisting of past and current yacht club members.

Open House primary contest shapes up with five Republicans

Five Republicans and three Democrats filed for the upcoming House primary as filing closed at 5 pm Tuesday. Republicans are Leonard Atkinson Walter Baker Charles Colton Albert Hayes and Roy Pigeon. Democrats are Daniel Honan Chester O Donnell and John Kennedy. Honan may seek State Treasurer creating possible withdrawals on both sides.

Local Youths at Camp Devens Training in New England

Seventeen local young men are in a Citizens Military Training course at Camp Devens for a month. Governor's Day is set for Thursday August 4 at 2 p m with attendance by the Pleasant Park Yacht Club officers and board who donated a best rifleman cup.
