Whippet racing introduces a fresh speed thrill as small dogs sprint 200 yards in just over twelve seconds. The piece explains breed origins, British racing crowds, and a detailed handicap system based on weight differences to level the field.
Chairman G Wallace Tibbetts of the Board of Selectmen will start the 10 mile road race on August 9. Prizes for the tennis tournament will be awarded as exhibition at the Blue Bell on Winthrop Street next week.
Sunday activities at Union Congregational Church on Tewksbury Street and Union Church at Point Shirley mark the Tercentenary celebration. Frank Tucker, historical committee chair, will discuss Religious Activities on the Early Settlers in the morning at Tewksbury Street, with an evening talk at Point Shirley on Point Shirley's place in history.
Next week's The Review will feature Tercentenary sections including a four page rotogravure insert and about sixty Winthrop images. Notable articles by renowned writers promise a collectible issue available Thursday evening July 31 at newsstands and stores. Early purchase advised to ensure a copy.
Monty Wells world record hurdler and his father meet Crowley to discuss a Monty exhibition at the Golf Club on August 9. He will race the 70 yard 50 yard and 45 yard hurdles with his current record times 8 35 seconds 6 23 seconds and 5 45 seconds. A prize will be awarded and the event will feature athletic prizes next week.
At a Board of Trustees meeting in Town Hall the July pledge total reached 916.50 as trustees conduct nightly calls to dilatory donors. President Eugene P. Whittier warned funds are exhausted and work must stop within a week without at least 10,000 more. superintendent Mary J. Jahnle stressed the urgent need for new quarters.
Frank K. Hatfield, general chairman of the Winthrop Tercentenary Committee, will be in the Hearing Room at Winthrop Town Hall every evening next week from 8 00 to 9 00 p m. He will discuss final parade details and the Old Home Week program for August 2nd and answer questions.
Citizens and residents are urged to cooperate with the local Tercentenary Committee to manage parking for the parade day Saturday August 2. No cars will be allowed along the parade route and the committee will issue instructions to follow. Boy Scouts will assist in enforcing or guiding attendees.
The Citizens Military Training Course will award cups to Winthrop boys who show leadership at Camp Devens in Ayer Massachusetts and Camp Adams in Newport Rhode Island. C M T C participants serve in July with prizes announced at season end. Frank F. Bauer overseeing plans notes local groups will donate cups for top performers.
Superintendent David Belcher of the local post office announced only one mail delivery on Saturday August 2 to allow postal workers to participate in or view the Tercentenary parade marking the town’s opening celebration.
On August 2 and 7 the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company under Capt. Francis S. Cummings will unveil a town memorial tablet in the Town Hall foyer. The tablet honors early settlers including Major General Edward Gibbons Rev John Oliver Valentine Hill William Aspinwall Elias Maverick Deane Winthrop and Capt Jose Winthrop. The 1:30 p.m. August 2 ceremony features a historical sketch by Capt Henry D Comerais and will present the tablet to G Wallace Tibbetts.
The Massachusetts State Association of Selectmen holds its second annual outing in Winthrop in the high school hall this Saturday July 26. The meeting starts at 10 36 a m with town affairs on the agenda. Dinner is served at 2 p m with impromptu speaking during the meal and adoption of by laws and the constitution. After adjournment members tour Revere Beach for swimming and amusements.
