Historic Box Found In Foundation Of Methodist Church
Wreckers uncovered an oval tin box placed in 1871 within the foundation of the old Methodist Episcopal Church. Despite 58 years of age the tin box was well preserved aside from rust. Dr. Orville E. Johnson, secretary of church records and Building Committee member, opened the box and examined its contents a small New Testament largely rotted though legible in parts.

Local Man Rescues Self From Flaming Motorboat Blaze
Fred McDuffie, 38, of Shirley Street, leapt into Shirley Gut waters when his motorboat burst into flames. He swam to the Point Shirley Yacht Club dock fully clothed and was pulled to safety in an exhausted state as his boat’s engine backfired. His wife and two children arrived too late to prevent danger. The burning wreck was towed ashore.
