The Church of St. John the Evangelist in Winthrop filled with sorrow as Daniel E. Ahern veteran cashier died after brief illness at Brooks Hospital Brookline. Rev James J Carroll led the high mass of requiem at 10 with Rev Edward A Conroy deacon and Rev Leo Flynn subdeacon. Continued on Page 8
George J Hamilton of the Pleasant Park Yacht Club was elected commodore of the Massachusetts Bay Yacht Clubs Association at the Bowes Wharf meeting. He has long been active in yachting and serves as secretary of Pleasent Park YC and chaired the Tercentenary Regatta Committee last summer.
Massachusetts Congressman Charles L. Underhill criticized the Wickersham Commission report saying it did not take a firm stand for re submissions to a nationwide vote on the eighteenth amendment. He urged a constitutional referendum to determine state support for prohibition. He is listed as a dry advocate.
The Board of Street Commissioners of Boyton granted the petitioners leave to withdraw the request to install an oil tank farm in East Eastern after a brief public hearing. About 300 residents of East Boston protested as Representative Clancy denounced the plan, arguing Winthrop already faced pipeline odor and noise from existing tanks.
Gordon G Fullerton a local businessman and Chevrolet manager announces his candidacy for selectman. The Winthrop Republican League lauds him as a bright hustling young leader and a fine representative of the town’s younger generation. He is a member of the Blue Lodge Masons Crystal Ray Lodge IOOF Winthrop Golf Club and Cottage Park Yacht Club.
At the Antal meeting on Wednesday January 21 officers were re-elected to their posts. Commodore Charles A Williams, Vice Commodore Kenneth Magoon, Secretary Horace A Magee, and Treasurer John D McNeish will serve again. Directors George W Gibby and John P Gore were chosen for two-year terms. Gordon G Fullerton Gaius Walls and Matthew McDonald joined the entertainment committee. Robert Beveridge Eber Wells and Charles Gearhart joined the auditing committee. The annual treasurer’s report was presented.
Ex Representative Michael F Shaw told a Legislative Committee that the Metropolitan District Commission should be allowed to take a strip of land inside the Revere Winthrop roadway to protect dwellings undermined by waves. He warned someone could be killed by a falling building without action. Representative George A Gilman urged the city of Revere to act for future protection, noting Boston would have condemned the buildings long ago.
Chairman Tibbetts announced that the Board of Trade petitioned to extend Walden Street to Winthrop Centre. The current Walden Street runs parallel to the railroad from Main to Lincoln, and the proposal seeks a parallel extension from Lincoln to Pauline to create a direct link from Main to Winthrop Centre.
The Winthrop Community Hospital held its annual meeting in the Town Hall Hearing room. Eugene P. Whittier was reelected president, Preston B. Churchill treasurer, and Albert S. Smith clerk. Eight board members for three years were named, and Sidney E. Blandford chaired due to Whittier’s illness. Reports praised progress toward the new hospital building and noted all bills and contracts are paid.
A large Winthrop gathering mourned Rev John T OBrien pastor of the Church of St John the Evangelist dying Sunday at the parochial residence He served 42 years in the archdiocese and was 69 He was born in Plymouth ordained in Boston 1889 and remembered for eloquence devotion and leadership across several parishes.
A bill filed in the Legislature at the request of Representatives Carroll Airola and Senator Brodine seeks joint investigations by the State Reclamation Board and the Department of Public Works into dredging Belle Isle Inlet Boston to East Boston and the adjacent marsh lands between Revere Boston and Revere Winthrop. The measure requests study of dredging costs mosquito abatement and the feasibility of industrial use and other development for the project areas.
Senate Bill 197 filed by Senator Brodbine and others calls for removing the abandoned steamer Coyote from Apple Island Channel in Boston Harbor. The hulk off Winthrop near Cottage Park has spoiled the shore line, threatens yachts, and prompts local yachtsmen to push for its removal.
Commodore George Hamilton of the Massachusetts Bay Yacht Clubs Association presented a petition to the Department of Public Works on Wednesday requesting dredging of the Winthrop and Cottage Park channels by the State. The state would cover three quarters of the cost with the town paying the remaining quarter. articles will appear in the annual town meeting warrant to appropriate the town's share.
Winthrop Town Solicitor Leon C. Guptill urges adopting a by law on billboards and advertising signs at the March Town Meeting. He notes boards spend much time on the issue and references prior registration efforts and general legislation granting the DPW rulemaking power.
