The Winthrop Unemployment Committee asks residents to donate to aid families in need. Through E R Clarke and the Winthrop Public Schools, a letter is circulated by 3500 students detailing past aid of 716.47 for food and 279.19 for coal, urging donations to help two hundred families facing cold and hunger.
A representative from the Income Tax Division will assist local citizens with income tax returns. The sessions run January 22 and February 12 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Town Hall. Call the town hall to participate.
The Deane Winthrop Chapter of the D A R held a Guest Day and thirtieth anniversary on Tuesday afternoon January 14 1936. Regent Mrs Georgia C Snow welcomed members and guests of honor. State Regent Mrs Frank J Nason and National Vice Regent Miss Nancy Harris brought greetings. Historian Mrs Sarah L Whorf reviewed the chapter from its 1906 founding to today. Tales of two granddaughters of the American Revolution and Mrs Sarah A Hall were shared. Mrs Lucy H Greenlaw recounted itinerant life of Mrs Mary Anne Thompson and Mrs Marietta S Doore read a life story. The afternoon featured a play Meet the Wife by D A R members Mand McGarry Tibbetts.
John P. Coghlan of 68 Thornton Park died early Saturday January 11 at Community Hospital after a long illness. Born in Cambridge 64 years ago he lived in Winthrop 26 years and was a longtime employee of U S S Rubber Company. After retirement he served as custodian for Winthrop Post 146 American Legion.
The notice outlines 83 town meeting seats by precinct with numbers listed for each. Precinct 11 will elect 11 members, Precinct 3 will elect 20, and Precinct 1 and 13 are indicated, with other precinct counts partially shown. The terms will be for a full term beginning next year.
At the Winthrop Savings Bank annual meeting Arthur W Gibby was elected president. Kilburn C Brown and William G Grant were elected vice presidents, with Preston B Churchill treasurer and Edward R Thomas clerk. Current board members were reelected.
A town meeting report lists incumbents seeking re election and new candidates filing nomination papers for March town offices. Names include Selectmen Atkinson ODonnell and Pigeon Town Treasurer Aiken Town Clerk McLeod Health Commissioner Vaughan Tax Collector Nelson Assessor Dunham Park Commissioner Hayes Free Warden Smith Water Commissioner Bauer Constables Childress Edwards Planning Board Grimes Heath Farquhar Burns Duncan plus challengers Belcher Mulloy Carver Jenkins Daw Sweeney with many more expected before closing.
Registration events set for February and March across multiple precincts. Voters may register at designated precinct locations or at regional offices during specified dates.
A public hearing on all dredging petitions within the State by the Department of Public Works is set for Thursday January 2 in the Nassaire Street office in Ross ton. Interested parties are urged to attend.
The Massachusetts Bay Yarents Clubs Association holds its annual meeting and officer election on January 23 at Pleasant Park Yacht Club. State Treasurer Chas Hurley will speak at the luncheon after the election. delegates from 37 clubs attend. Local yachtsmen are invited by Commodore George J. Hamilton of Pleasant Park Club.
The contract for printing the 1935 annual town report has been awarded to E. L. Grimes Printing Co. of 368 Congress St. Boston by the Board of Selectmen. MW J. Grimes of 210 Woodside Ave. is president and manager of the firm.
A bill filed in the Legislature by Representative Daniel J. Honan for the Boston, Revere, Beach & Lynn Railroad seeks authority to extend the East Boston tunnel to near Neptune Road, with a station to transfer patrons to broad gauge cars. The plan would replace ferry-boat transfer, move riders through the tunnel to Atlantic Avenue, Scollage Square or Bowdoin Square, and require acceptance by both the Legislature and Boston Elevated Railway officials. Details remain undecided pending passage and negotiations.
The Board of Selectmen and Chief of Police Pumphret launch a campaign to curb all night street parking in Winthrop during winter. Cars left on streets hinder snowplows and plowing efficiency, so authorities will tow and garage offenders until towing and garaging costs are paid.
William F. Abely of 274 Winthrop Road announced his candidacy for the Board of Assessors in the upcoming town election. A longtime resident and former credit and financial manager for a major electrical firm, he brings finance expertise to the office and serves on the town Advisory Committee.
