History of The Garden Club of Winthrop

The Garden Club of Winthrop organized January 22 1934 with twenty nine charter members and grew to forty this year. Officers at founding included President Mrs E C R Bagley and others. By Laws were adopted January 29. The club joined the Massachusetts Federation of Garden Clubs in January 1935. The Year Book records aims to stimulate gardening knowledge protect native trees plants and shrubs and civic planting, with meetings the third Monday 11am to 3pm at member homes with a box luncheon. The Year Book also contains a poem about tending a garden.

Winthrop Hospital Corp Holds Annual Meeting Jan 22

The Winthrop Community Hospital Corporation will hold its annual meeting in the hearing room at Town Hall on Wednesday evening January 22. Reports of officers will be presented and acted on, trustees elected, and a treasurer and clerk chosen. Afterward trustees meet to elect president and vice-presidents for the ensuing year. Citizens may attend to join the hospital corporation.

Park Board Proposes Ingleside Park Flood Plan for Skating

The Park Board announced Ingleside Park may be partially flooded to create skating areas at a total cost of 50000 dollars. Chairman Robert Kirby said flooding will occur as ground conditions permit and two hockey zones will be boarded off to reduce injuries from sticks and pucks.

Town considers buying entire right of way of defunct railroad

After a Monday meeting, the Board of Selectmen and bondholder counsel discuss purchasing the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn line right of way for 50 000. The plan includes stations and station areas in Winthrop except Beach and Playstead. A nearby real estate group held an option on part of the route but did not exercise it, leaving the town to secure the full line and enable urgent street projects.
