A large all day registration in town added 612 new names to the voting list ahead of the annual town election on Monday. Prior registrations brought the total to 8 884 voters, up from 8 822 last year. Independent candidates for the Board of Selectmen, led by John J. McCarthy supporters, helped drive the surge with over a hundred new voters registering.
The North Atlantic division of the Army Engineers calls dredging Shirley Gut economically unjustified and costly. The proposal to reopen the waterway to yachtsmen and small craft faces strong opposition as noted in a Boston Chamber of Commerce briefing.
With polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven candidates contest three seats on the Board of Selectmen. Incumbents Atkinson Pigeon O'Donnell face challengers Baker McCarthy Russell Belcher Mulloy amid endorsements from Republicans Independent Voters Civic Association and Jewish Civic League. Contests also spark in School Committee and other offices.
Mr and Mrs Charles R Bennison announce the opening of a new funeral home at 174 Winthrop Street. The facility will be open Sunday 10 am to 9 pm and Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday 1 pm to 9 pm. Bennison aims to serve Winthrop after 45 years in the profession.
