Metropolitan Water Commission explains the odd water taste attributed to Spot Pond. Microscopic organisms were identified as the cause but officials say the organisms are harmless and pose no health risk to residents.
Winthrop Board of Water Commissioners protested the towns drinking water taste and odor problems in a February 18 letter to the Metropolitan District Commission. They requested relief and an explanation to reduce the disturbances and improve water quality for residents.
The Winthrop Women's Club held a joint meeting with a Washington Program on February 19 in Cambridge at the Craigie House. Members and guests gathered in a ceremonious setup with a chair once used by George Washington loaned by Mrs. Frank W. Amadon. Chapter officers and the Daughters of American Revolution presided as the American Creed, flag salute, and America were sung, followed by remarks from Mrs. Fred L. Pigeon, Boston School Committee member.
The new Community Hospital on Lincoln Street drew four to five thousand visitors over three inspection days last Saturday Sunday and Monday. A steady flow arrived Sunday and Monday with a Monday afternoon peak and many out-of-town guests noted among attendees.
Over 250 residents attended an aid fundraiser exhibition of boxing wrestling fencing jiu jitsu tumbling and strength feats at the Winthrop Yacht Club Hall organized by Boston Y M C A teams under Norman A. Gray and Gus Johnson. A car fire later caused $100 damage to Louis Smiths auto on Wave Way Avenue.
A group titled Form Committee to Clean Up Politics plans to start work by endorsing a slate of town candidates. A preliminary meeting will pick the slate and set the committee program. The group aims to interview every town woman before Election Day to explain endorsements and present plans. A full statement will follow next week.
The Community Players present The Rear Car a thrilling comedy drama for the Winthrop Unemployment Committee. Fred G Knell and William D Childress lead a local cast with new scenery and effects. Performance is Tuesday March 1 at 8 pm in Odd Fellows Hall Pauline Street with proceeds to the committee. Tickets at the door or through Mr. Childress.
With the March 7 election approaching, precinct officers and workers are needed to check voters and count ballots. The note urges offering a day’s work to unemployed residents, including white-collar workers, who have been out of work.
The text argues that hoarding currency harms the holder and their family and that returning money to circulation is in everyone’s interest as a patriotic service to the country. It frames currency hoarding as contrary to the common good and urges action for national welfare.
Sixty nine articles were approved last year and this year the warrant shows fifty nine items for the annual March Town Meeting on March 21. The articles cover street work zoning changes Point Shirley and Magee’s corner Ingleside Park planning a school upgrade Winthrop Centre and Cemetery Commissioner purchases. Several topics are expected to spark discussion during the meeting.
Mrs. Frank Vera of 80 Cottage Avenue turned over 50.40 to the Winthrop Unemployment Committee, proceeds from a bridge and whist party held last Thursday night at Constitution Hall donated by M. Conti. Prizes and chairs were donated by the American Legion, Winthrop Yacht Club, Jewish Community Centre, and R. C. Kirby. A patch-work quilt of 1,000 pieces, over 100 years old, was sold as a feature, donated by Estelle Gow of 4 Johnson Avenue.
A delegation of local Spanish War Veterans attended a Gloucester ceremony Sunday for a memorial tablet listing 500 volunteers from 1898. Mayor Col. John E. Parker presided in the Council Chamber as Capt. Lester Wass Post No. 3 and American Legion Band offered music and a McKinley Camp collation with Ladies' Auxiliary help. Comrades present included Commander John J. Keefe and V C Thomas W. Spear among others.
The MIT Musical Club in uniform concert at Odd Fellows Hall drew a large Tech audience on February 22 sponsored by Winthrop Post 146 American Legion. A varied program featured songs by Chudleigh Candish Speaks Peel, banjo and instrumental pieces, soloists and a xylophone number, ending with a patriotic set including Over There and Take Me Back To Tech.
Registration in the town added 603 names to the voting list bringing total to 7979, up 48 from last year's 7931. Precinct 1 led with 168 additions, precinct 3 followed with 150, precincts 2 4 and 5 also recorded gains.
A special service was held February 22 by First Church of Christ, Scientist, Winthrop as part of the bicentennial program. The local church address focused on George Washington and national heritage during the observance.
Forty three candidates will contest the March town election for fourteen town offices with only moderator health and library trustees uncontested. Churchill and Fullerton seek re election as the race sharpens with anticipated GOP endorsements and a women’s group backing several contenders.
The Pleasant Park Yacht Club defeats the Intercolonial Club of Roxbury in a 45 tournament that ends tied 256 before a supper and entertainment with eighty visiting members. Frank Sanger wins a five game rubber against Mr. Gillis by taking three of five games for the local club.
Judge Samuel R. Cutler served as the evening speaker Monday February 22 at the Bellingham Cary Mansion Chelsea. Members of the Society of Winnisimmet Rumney Marsh and Pullin Point gathered to honor Washington's birthday. Winthropites attended including Channing Howard who gave a brief talk.
Charles R Bennison chairman of the committee for the Unemployment Relief Fund expresses appreciation to Tewksbury's Express Co for transportation donated by Boston firms. The event was held Thursday evening to aid unemployment relief.
