Winthrop residents faced a week of registration for War Ration Book No 2 with 17 000 citizens processed by teachers. Supply of declaration blanks ran short but schools printed more, and begin March 1, retailers must collect points for canned goods while institutions register March 1–10 and retailers by April 1.
The Winthrop Catholic Woman's Club marks its 28th annual Presidents Day with Rt Rev Richard J Quinlan as speaker and the Medford Catholic Women's Club Glee Club performing. Reservations close February 24 and may be made through listed committee members.
Massachusetts Victory Book Campaign Week runs March 16. The local committee includes Eugene P. Whittier chairman of the Library Trustees, Mrs E Jeanette Greathead Red Cross representative, Chester F. Griffin USO representative, and Dorothy L. Kinney librarian chair. Send book contributions to the Public Library by March 6. Slogan: Any book you really want to keep is a good one to give.
Friends learn Lt Colonel Charles J. Cashman and Mrs. Elinor Garvey are stationed in Longview Texas. He heads Harmon General Hospital Dental Surgery, supervising all dental work there.
Lt and Mrs William Wells heard a sunlit Valentines Day greeting when their son Bill phoned from San Francisco revealing he survived a Pacific battle ship sinking after 16 days at sea. He joined the U S Navy May 1 and awaits a new assignment while hoping for a home visit before duty.
Air raid sirens to be tested every Saturday at 12 noon across the state, aligning all tests with the Army’s request for a uniform day and hour for tests.
The Red Cross Blood Donor Center has moved to 485 Boylston St at the Berkeley corner. Volunteers are needed daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to reach a weekly 5000 pint target. Appointments are arranged by the Winthrop Chapter Blood Donor Committee with listed chairmen and office codes.
Charlotte Abrams 20 daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Abrams of 70 Almont Street completed a five week indoctrination course at the Naval Training School for WAVES on the campus of Iowa State Teachers College. She now awaits assignment to a specialized school to learn a Navy trade and relieve a man for sea duty.
On February 22 Winthrop Post No. 146 American Legion honored 36 members with 25 year service certificates and sleeve patches. A turkey supper followed for 126 attendees, with Judge Charles J. Brown recounting WWI draft boards and WWII induction procedures. State Adjutant Coleman Curran spoke on veterans legislative matters.
Chairman Joseph F. O Hearn of the Winthrop Division announces that $6000 was raised in the drive just completed. He thanks workers and donors and shares a letter from Brooks Potter praising the effort and proposing Winthrop form a Community Chest for future funding.
Frank H. Grady thanks the American Red Cross for locating and delivering his father’s illness message and guiding his family home. He praises local chairman Mrs. Carl Floyd for coordinating efforts to aid the Coast Guard family and notes the organization’s support for men in service.
Joseph O'Hern Jr writes to thank the Winthrop paper for aiding the Greater Boston United War Fund Drive. He notes the drive raised $6000 in Winthrop this year and credits cooperation with much of the success.
Voters head to polls 7 AM to 8 PM as town Treasurer and Town Clerk battles unfold. The Republican Town Committee endorses Edgar L. Ryerson against George W. Downie, while the Affiliated Citizens slate backs different candidates. Selectmen, cemetery, library, school board, and clerk races draw engaged organizations and active campaigns as turnout remains uncertain.
The USC-Winthrop Soldiers and Sailors Committee held its second meeting in the Town Hall Hearing Room on February 19. Rt. Rev. Richard J. Quinlan outlined funding from USO-Greater Boston and the United War Fund, with the first monthly allotment received by Treasurer Chester Griffin. A three member committee will study recreation center needs. future meetings will be on the third Friday each month.
Captain and Mrs William H Crowell Jr announce the birth of a daughter Diane Lee on February 9 1943 in New Britain Connecticut.
A Winthrop Catholic Woman's Club social night featured the musical comedy Twelve Old Maids in St John Hall on February 22. Cast members wore quaint costumes and the performance drew hearty laughter while portraying love affairs.
Town Clerk Joseph O'Hern, who broke his ankle weeks ago, is resting comfortably as friends support his campaign for re election.
