Rites Held For Michael J. Kelly

More than 75 priests of the Archdiocese of Boston attended a solemn high requiem mass for Michael J. Kelly 88 of 86 Johnson Ave East Boston an undertaker. He was father to Rev Otis F. Kelly and Sister Mary Cletus. Burial followed at Holy Cross Cemetery Malden with a large pallbearer and honorary pallbearer delegation.

Winthrop Selectmen Back 1944 War Fund Drive

The Board of Selectmen endorse the 1944 War Fund Drive for the Winthrop Chapter of the Red Cross. The drive opens at 2:00 p m on Red Cross Sunday February 27 with a flag raising at Town Hall and bells rung to announce the start. Residential solicitors will call on all homes between 2 and 6 p m that day.

Large Attendance at Winthrop Catholic Women's Club Tea

A large crowd gathered at St. John's Hall for the Winthrop Catholic Woman's Club Annual Tea on Sunday afternoon February 20. Past presidents were honored with many from Greater Boston Catholic Clubs in attendance. May Murray sang with her mother Mrs. J K Murray providing accompaniment as Mrs Norman Horrigan chaired. State Teachers' College at Framingham president Mr Martin O Connor spoke on juvenile delinquency with poetry interludes and high ideals. The Rt Rev Richard J Quinlan was also present.

The Fleur de Lis Lady of the Lake Chapter initiated seven Maids at St Johns Episcopal church on a Tuesday evening. Maiden Marie Barker advanced to Lady as Emily May received the Princess degree and roses. Initiation carried out by Queen Frances with Past Queen Annie and Katherine Kirkpatrick assisting.

Town Election to Feature One Major Contest and Referendum

Voters will choose between John W. Fielding and William F. Moran for the board of assessors seat at the town election on March 6. A referendum on forming a Department of Public Works will also appear, with the plan to oversee sewers parks streets and water systems. The town meeting warrant for March 20 includes 63 articles, many routine.

Red Cross Drive To Open On Sunday

Sunday afternoon February 27 a Red Cross War Fund drive will solicit contributions from 2 to 6 pm. The local chapter aims to raise 6 000 of a 20 000 quota to aid 1 800 service men and women. Home Service handles emergencies, furloughs, allotments, and veterans support through three men and three women.

Local USO Celebrates First Birthday With Dinner

The Winthrop USO marks its first anniversary with an anniversary dinner at the USO Club on February 16. George Stokes presided as toast master as about 75 committee members, army officials of the Harbor Defenses of Boston, and Greater Boston USO officials attended. The program featured Rev. Ralph M. Harper and Monsignor Richard J. Quinlan praising volunteers and local cooperation.
