At the registration deadline Tuesday February 21 10 P M the town added 505 new registrations. Despite annual losses of about 500 names from moves and other causes the increase is linked to many candidates for town offices. With 6140 names in 1927 the voting strength now stands at 6645 and a March 5 election is expected to draw a large turnout.
Bids for the New Town Hall will be opened and read by the Committee on the New Town Hall on Thursday evening March 1 at the Selectmen's office in the Town Hall. Contractors bidding on the specifications must file bids by 7 30 P M on March 1. Work on the new Town Hall will begin immediately after bid selection. Advertise in the Review.
The board led by Frank E. Whitman with Joshua Remby and Joseph E. Hodgkins increased sidewalk and street allocations while approving funds for a new modern town hall, marking a notable year in their administration.
In summing up the board's achievements the Great Head sea-wall ranks second in importance to the new town hall. Rezoning of the town was another important step in the current administration. Transportation and traffic conditions include Revere Street widening.
A Massachusetts measure by Representative Edgar F. Power creating a reserve police force of up to five members will be placed in the town warrant for voters at the upcoming town meeting. Appointments follow the regular police process, reserves report to the police chief, and compensation is set by the Board of Selectmen.
The Metropolitan Affairs committee heard proposals for a bridge or tunnel to East Boston. A seven member commission would be appointed by city mayors and regional leaders to study the project, with power to form an engineering department and seek a $100000 appropriation to determine feasibility, location, and cost.
A joint meeting of the Board of Selectmen Advisory Board and Boston Revere Beach Lynn R R vice president discussed removing Shirley Street tracks from Beach Station to Point Shirley and operating a bus line while resurfacing plans are decided. The street’s condition is poor and wooden ties prevent full resurfacing. officials aim for a temporary patchwork solution until a long term decision.
The town plans a special meeting at 8 PM in the Junior High School to consider acceptance or rejection of proposed zoning laws. The Planning Board reports on the rezoning work, including hiring Arthur C. Comey as consultant and debates over whether to reserve zones for one family dwellings. The town, small and predominantly residential, contends with changes aimed at guiding future growth and restricting development.
After three days of court action last week an agreement was reached at Monday's recess in the land damages suit of J D Peebles and Mrs M Sills against the Town of Winthrop. The dispute arose when the town widened Revere Street near the Missing Link and moved five buildings and tore down a cottage. The town had offered 4000 dollars, the plaintiffs claimed 15000. The settlement fixes damages at 7750 dollars. Attorneys for the town were Gibbs Guptill and Hurley. Plaintiffs were represented by Peter Donahue.
Park Commissioners plan to propose a $2400 appropriation at the upcoming town meeting for replacing obsolete wooden bleachers in Ingleside Park with steel structures. They deem further repairs impractical after spending $300 last year to make the wooden stands safe for 1927 and view continued repairs as wasteful.
Consideration is being given to a proposed development on marsh land between the Thornton Station tracks and the Pleasant Street area. The plan envisions a cement rip rap shoreline from the station to the bay edge, with streets and a subdivision creating seventy five building lots along the water.
