Forty nine articles comprise the warrant issued for the annual town meeting next week. Most items are routine department matters with few controversial issues. Provisions include up to 1000 for town land near the golf club, funds for an incinerator and land purchase, a police signal desk and station at about 4500, and protections for town officers against vehicle related damages.
New Readin and all residents of Winthrop have completed the required P School course and may obtain temporary identification cards from Chairman Percy L. Sterling. Cards are valid until official IDs are issued in accordance with the committee requirements with arrangements to obtain State cards Identification Officer Lt. Wells of the Police Department.
Verney, a selectman, was removed to his home with pneumonia after a cold. He remains convalescing and has reportedly reached the crisis point, with friends hoping for a speedy recovery following last week’s board meeting.

Lent emphasized in three community meetings this weekend February 2022 at First Baptist First Methodist St Johns Episcopal and Union Congregational churches. Dr Wesley Huber of the New England Evangelistic Association will speak at First Baptist on Friday at 8 00 PM with Winthrop pastors.
The March of Time presents When Air Raids Strike showing Tuesday February 24 through Thursday February 26 at the Winthrop and State Theatres. The film graphically depicts aerial bombardment and British counter measures offering citizens a glimpse of air raid procedures and defense tactics.
Winthrop Lodge of Elks completes plans for a Friendship Dinner honoring Daniel J. Honan and Andrew A. Biggio. The event Sunday Feb 22 at the Elks Home auditorium includes a 6:00 dinner, 4 to 6 reception, and guests from state and town officials plus Elks from other lodges. Tickets available from committee members or at the Elks' Home. reservations requested by Feb 20.
A Winthrop meeting of the Women's Division of the Committee on Public Safety was led by Chairwoman Mrs. Louis F. Salerno. She urged representatives to spread safety program details through churches and neighborhoods and noted all services are voluntary with no paid workers.
Winthrop’s United War Fund Drive surpassed expectations with a final tally of 6602.00 dollars, about 150 percent of the 4400 dollar quota. Local Chairman George J Hamilton praised Winthrop residents for their patriotism and generous support to the national humanitarian drive.
Superintendent Arthur E. Boudreau of the School Department announces a new first aid course. Registration will be held at the Senior High School next Tuesday evening February 24th at 7 30 p m. The class will start after registration.
Two hundred additional citizens registered at the Winthrop High School Tuesday for the ARP course under the Winthrop Committee on Public Safety. Five classes will run Tuesday and Thursday for nine sessions, then four hours of First Aid. Two additional First Aid classes are already in session. Registration opens this Thursday evening.
About 1200 men aged 20 to 45 registered for the draft on Sunday and Monday in Winthrop. The drive, conducted in local schools under the selective service board, involved many teachers and will assign numbers to registrants in March.
Eight candidates will seek three seats on the board of selectmen at the annual town meeting next month. Two incumbents Ross F. Batchel der and Arthur F. Verney seek re election. Others include Roy W. Pigeon George Hamilton Harry Bangs Bernard Busch W Kenneth Kelly and Walter Smith.
Announcement by Frank Gorman chair of Winthrop Public Safety division says a test of proposed air raid sirens may be held Sunday March 1 at 3 PM using the anticipated siren type. The test is an initial step to gauge how many sirens are needed to cover the town and depends on full installation.
Winthrop Public Safety Committee urges blind residents to register with the defense committee. The State Department of Public Safety offers air raid rules in Braille and will provide copies to interested blind residents who contact local officials.
Second Lt. Roger C. Foley of the United States Marine Corps Reserve was graduated from the Reserve Officers' Class at Quantico and will be assigned to duty with troops. The 22-year-old Winthrop, Massachusetts native, son of Mr and Mrs Daniel Foley, is an alum of the University of Notre Dame and has built a notable Marine record since enlisting in Boston last May. Lt Foley paid a weekend visit home.
