Selectman Walter Smith reports Winthrop has exceeded its $470,000 war bond quota. With $459,075 in by last Wednesday and an additional $150,000 reportedly credited, final figures should show the town surpassed the target by as much as $200,000. Citizens are praised for patriotic support to help bring servicemen home.
The 22nd annual Linen Ball of Winthrop Community Hospital Aid Association drew nearly 150 couples despite a snow storm. Art Rubin's orchestra played as attendees danced and supper events preceded the ball. Ticket and program sales, refreshments, and concessions were estimated to exceed $1000, funding linen for a new 28 bed hospital wing. Hospital president Leslie E. Griffin and board members praised the committee led by Miss Rosetta Key and Mrs. Frank Farquhar and yacht club organizers Clayton Nickerson, Charles Cammal, and Waldo Bucek.
The Pleasant Park Y. C. sponsors its annual pre election dinner for residents. The event will be held Thursday evening March 2 at the club house.
Town office candidates are invited to address voters at a public diner, where they will outline their qualifications and platforms. The event is open to the public.
Massachusetts towns shared 7.1 million dollars from the 1944 state gasoline tax under an Executive Council warrant. Boston led with 1.3 million. Winthrop received 24 thousand 590 dollars. Other recipients include Springfield 260 thousand 936 dollars, Worcester 291 thousand, Brockton 475 thousand, and Chelsea 44 thousand.
Milk costs and labor together account for about four fifths of the total cost to produce milk, highlighting the dominant role of input prices and labor in dairy economics.

A town tin can collection is scheduled for next Wednesday February 23 replacing Tuesday due to a legal holiday. Town trucks will collect cans in designated areas during the day.
Chairman Percy L. Sterling says the local Civilian Defense Committee remains intact and will continue operations though with curtailment. Police handle control room duties, women volunteers relieved, all officers and units remain ready, meetings called as needed, and town supplies are kept ready for immediate use if required.
The War Price and Rationing Board will close all day on Tuesday February 22 in observance of the holiday. There will be no evening session on Tuesday, and the board resumes usual hours Thursday evening next week, per Chairman John Orrall.
Boston University professor Dr H Augustine Smith will speak at St John’s Episcopal Church and conduct the hour of music on the first company evening in Lent February. An American poet quotes sweet lines praising his calming influence and healing voice.
Willis J. Reid & Son in Winthrop proposes an Honor Roll memorial 19 feet 6 inches by 11 feet 6 inches to honor local service members. A committee of pastors and veterans leaders selects the site in front of the flag pole near the post office, with School Committee observers. The memorial will list every Winthrop service member and be dedicated on Memorial Day.
Radcliffe College hosted a two day conference on the College Graduate in Public School Teaching attended by 25 Massachusetts communities. Speakers included Byron Hollinshead of the Harvard Committee Miss Ruth Houghton Frances D. Dugan Margaret Hamlin Ernest R. Caverly and Patrick J. Sullivan with attendance by superintendents high school principals and school committee chairmen.
Members and guests of the Winthrop Woman's Club are asked to come Friday February 18 for a talk by Dr Hans Kohn of Smith on international relations. Kohn fills Harvard summer school and City Club courses, attracting large audiences. Invite friends to attend.
