Missionary Sewing Meet Opens 1944 at Union Church
The Missionary Committee of the Woman’s Association of the Union Congregational Church, chaired by Mrs Grage Smith, held the first sewing meeting of 1944 on February 3 at Mrs Ethel B Crosby’s home. The two hour session yielded good results with refreshments served by Mrs Marion Brinsley. The next meeting will be at Mrs Rose Bentley’s home on February 17.

Local Man Joins 5th AAF Rough Riders
Sergeant Philip A. Monaghan, 25, son of Mr and Mrs Philip W Monaghan of 307 Bowdoin St, has been assigned to duty with the 5th AAF Rough Raiders a medium bomber strafing unit in New Guinea. He entered the Army in 1941 and was promoted to sergeant in 1943. He is a Winthrop High School graduate and worked in Arlington Mass before enlisting. The squadron plays a key role in the current Southwest Pacific offensive.

At Odd Fellows Hall February 4 the Winthrop Woman's Club reported Bonds totaling $7500 sold toward an ambulance plane costing $110,000. Members and friends lined the room with patriotic decor and posters. Proceedings included reports, U. S. O. needs, and plans for future drives and fostering wartime relief.

Army Navy Qualifying Test at Winthrop High School
The third Army Navy College Qualifying Test for the Army Specialized Training Program and the Navy College Program V-12 will be held Wednesday March 15 at 9:00 am at Winthrop Senior High School. Ages 17 to 21 high school graduates or to graduate by July 1 1944 may apply. Intent to take the test should be reported to Miss Porter Guidance Office.
