An old timers basketball game last week at the Winthrop Yacht Club drew one of the largest crowds ever, with hundreds turned away, as the event sponsored by Non-Partisan Voters League raised 564.25 for a local fund.
In a Thursday exhibition at the Winthrop Yacht Club Hall the Knights of Columbus defeated the Old Timers 55 to 32. Admission bottlenecks left hundreds outside as spate of near capacity crowds filled the venue under the Non-Partisan Voters League banner.
John Colburn aged 83 of 115 Loring road Winthrop dies. He left a lone survivor of a G A R post once numbering 300, Charles A. Troup aged 96 of Bellevue avenue Winthrop. Colburn was active in veteran and fraternal affairs. Funeral at his home Tuesday 2 PM conducted by Rev W J Day, burial Oak Grove cemetery. Widow Ella D. Colburn 83, three sons Walter L Cambridge Frank J Waterbury George L Somerville, daughter Mrs George Stevens Loring road Winthrop. Anne Garvey visiting Plympton.
The Senate rejected an adverse committee report on a proposal to force Chelsea Revere and Winthrop to pay a proportional share of Suffolk County expenses, currently borne by Boston. Debate highlighted who should bear costs, representation, and historical fairness among communities.
The Republican Town Committee of Winthrop organized under statutory rules and elected Frank Freundlich as president. Freundlich, a longtime Winthrop resident and Boston attorney, is described as well qualified to lead the committee.
January added more than twenty families to the unemployment committee's relief list as winter deepens. Door to door food drives by four girls helped stock staples, with meat eggs and vegetables purchased by the committee.
The Winthrop Community Hospital Aid Association stages its annual ball Friday evening February 10 at the Elks Ballroom Washington Avenue. Mrs S W Crowell chairs the ball committee with Mary Kinney B J Ahearn and others, Night Hawks Orchestra provide music, proceeds fund hospital supplies and equipment.
Winthrop’s Red Cross chapter distributed about 400 dollars in new clothing to the unemployed. The aid includes 35 overalls 96 suits of underwear 191 stockings 11 jumpers 38 pants 25 bloomers 12 boys knickers and other materials.
The Non Partisan Voters' League met February 6 at Winthrop Machine Gun Co. HQ, 50 Jefferson St. The advisory board recommended, and the general body unanimously approved, that the league conduct open forums inviting all candidates to speak before the public in a truly non partisan setting.
Former Selectman G. Wallace Tibbetts speaks at the School of Politics about the Pre Primary Conventions set for April 1934. He cites Francis Prescott on caucus origins and describes the evolution of party government and delegate selection amid fraud concerns and calls for regulation.
Mrs. Carl S. Floyd will serve as toastmaster at a joint banquet of the Daughters of Vermont and the Vermont Association of Boston Saturday at 7 P M at the Hotel Vendome. Guests include Stanley R Wilson of Vermont and Mrs Wilson, Erland S Fish and Mrs Fish, Frank P Bennett, Harvey E Averill and Mrs Averill, and the Rev John Nicol Mark who will speak on Americana.
Winthrop firemen fought a stubborn blaze Sunday night destroying a two car garage owned by Mrs. Ade laide F. Morrow behind 143 Sewall avenue. The flames threatened nearby houses before being halted. An automobile owned by Cameron Jarvis at 60 Floyd street parked in the garage was destroyed with an estimated loss of 1500 dollars.

The Winthrop Woman's Republican Club held a School of Politics on Feb 6 with Mrs Charles Leslie May presiding at 10:30 am. Mrs Alfred By Williams introduced speakers including Charles A Colton on Party Cohesion and Sylvia B Richmond who reviewed the 1932 Republican Convention. Attorney General Joseph F Erner reportedly accepted the program chair role.
Officials of the Narrow Gauge reinforce the Shighthead section between Highlands and Ocean Spray stations after storm damage. A pile-driver has worked ten days to install steel interlocking piles behind which large granite boulders will be placed to stop washouts of tracks and roadbed during future storms.
Town officials announced that all articles to be considered at the annual town meeting must be filed by Monday evening February 13.
Yachting community in Massachusetts Bay gathers at Cottage Park Yacht Club on Saturday to honor popular yachtsman Howard Gannett. Dinner at 7:00 p m precedes an evening program of entertainment with all invited.
Gordon G Fullerton Chevrolet salesman and service manager announces the procurement of showroom and window space at the former Ford Building 15 Woodside Ave. The 1933 Chevrolets will be on exhibition after February 15 inviting customers for demonstrations and explanations of new models.
Swett's Market at 3 Somerset Avenue Winthrop Centre promotes penny saving shopping with a complete line of fresh groceries meats and fish plus an in house bakery with daily baked bread biscuits cakes and pastries. Read the weekly specials listed in the advertisement on page 8.
The Winthrop Follies will be presented at the Winthrop Theatre on February 14 15 and 16 under the direction of George EB Keegan. The cast includes over 100 local young men and women and a pleasing program of entertainment will be offered on these three evenings. Invitations have been sent to town officials to attend. The event follows a similar successful show last year.
