WNAC selects Squantum site for new 1060 watt transmitter

Station WNAC announces a 1060 watt transmitter will go on air within 30 days from Squantum in Quincy after eight weeks of site scouting. John Shepard III and Irving B. Robinson join Mayor McGrath and city inspector for multiple site visits. The federal radio commission approved the site and an agreement to purchase the property was reached. The Squanto House site near Squantum Point overlooks Squanto Park with a Miles Standish and Squanto tablet nearby.

Cartwright Enters Selectman Race in Local Battle

J Sheldon Cartwright of 85 Johnson Avenue announces his candidacy for selectman amid circulating signature papers. A town appraiser and expert on electric rates, he previously moderated town meetings and represented the town on gas rate hearings. Norman G Wells had filed but is understood to have withdrawn.

Refusal of Johnson Avenue Apartment Project Permit

Building Inspector Timothy J. Mahaney declined to grant a permit for the proposed apartment house on Johnson Avenue citing a technical interpretation of the tenement house act. The decision prompted plans to seek a court ruling on the act as it applies to this case.

New Town Hall unofficially opened with many visitors

Winthrop's new Town Hall opened unofficially Monday evening as all departments began operations in the modern fireproof building. Citizens toured the site and saw offices for Assessors Sealer of Weights and Measures Building Inspector Planning Board Park Board and Water Department along a hallway leading to the rear.

Evacuation of Old Town Hall Saturday

Proper observance of the evacuation will be held this Saturday at 3 PM with town officials and assistants taking part. Moving pictures will be made as the old hall is locked after serving the town for seventy seven years before the officials march to the new Town Hall.

Widening Plan for Woodside Ave at Winthrop Centre

Planning Board weighs widening Woodside Avenue to ease traffic near the Winthrop Centre station. Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad seeks three lots placed in the business zone, while preserving a front open view and limiting crowding of station approaches. Final decision rests with town meeting.

Annual Election of Winthrop Board of Trade

The Winthrop Board of Trade will hold its annual meeting and officer election on Tuesday evening February 12 at the Machine Gun Veterans building Jefferson Street. The nominating committee report by Whittemore McMurray and Whittier will list officers for the coming year. After the election traffic rules and driving regulations will be discussed for the March town meeting. All members are urged to attend.
