Tibbetts accepts the nomination for Selectman and urges voters to assess a year of stewardship. He compares town duties to a business stocktake, asking if tasks were satisfactory and what could be improved to promote harmony and efficiency in town departments.
Information this week states that all articles for the annual Town Meeting warrant must be filed with the Board of Selectmen on or before Monday February 17. No articles will be accepted after the closing date leaving about ten days to file for those contemplating articles.
Selectman John P. Clancy filed nomination papers with the Town Clerk and will seek re election at the autumn March election. In a recent interview he stated his intentions and plans for another term, stressing continued service to the town.
A note from a former Selectman thanks supporters for the past year in office and expresses belief that 1538 will be a landmark year for Winthrop highlighting civic duty and ongoing public service.
Announcement of a public rally on February 18 to endorse candidates for all elective offices. Hosted by Joseph E Warner Attorney General and Wm G Clark District Attorney County. Expected large attendance with a detailed program to appear next issue.
Preston B. Churchill of 369 Winthrop Street files to run for the Board of Selectmen after careful consideration and service as town clerk for 18 years. He announced his candidacy in a brief statement this week.
Mr Churchill a longtime Winthrop figure with eighteen years as Town Clerk and active civic work, plus Boy Scout Council involvement and hospital treasurer duties, is noted amid local social circles. Meanwhile Little Betty Stevenson, daughter of Lester and Mrs Stevenson, is slowly recovering from pneumonia on Pico Avenue.
John W. Lill of 24 Villa Avenue, a long time town resident, declares his candidacy in local affairs. He runs the insurance firm Samuel H. & Co. and is active in Winthrop Lodge of Elks, having served as secretary and now chairing the Executive Committee.
Chairman Henry J. Barry of the Board of Selectmen addressed a Casassa banquet in Spanish Gables Revere. He highlighted the long friendly relations between Winthrop and Revere dating back to their Chelsea days and continuing today.
Residents protest Metro District police on Winthrop Shore Drive as trucks are barred except for local deliveries under a one-block limit. The Board of Selectmen and Metro District Commission scheduled a conference to resolve confusion stemming from a recent Supreme Court ruling on wrong-way truck trespass.
Winthrop police investigate a theft of clothing and jewelry valued at $650 from Miss Ann Franklin at 17 Orlando Avenue. The break occurred while she was away and the window on the second floor was accessed by a ladder.
Unofficial word places the Winthrop post office on the old town hall site under a three month contract. Bids and advertising are expected in the near term, with work likely to begin within about ten to twelve weeks and completion hoped within a 15 month period.
