Drug stores in town had been issued liquor package licenses but the Board of Selectmen revoked about nine licenses pending a Supreme Court ruling. The move follows ABC Commission requests to clarify the law affecting package goods sales and population based store limits.
The Winthrop Yacht Club Ladies Auxiliary held its annual meeting in the clubhouse on Monday afternoon January 25. Officers elected: President Mrs Frank S Waterman Vice-President Mrs B R Slocum Treasurer Mrs Annette B Cate Secretary Mrs Harold Osborne. A bouquet and tokens of esteem were given to Mrs Cate and Mrs Paterson for past service.
Leslie E. Griffin was unanimously re-elected president of Winthrop Community Hospital at the annual meeting held in the Town Hall hearing room on January 27. Officers re-elected include Harriet A’Hearn as 1st Vice President Sidney Blandford as 2nd Vice President Winfield Kendrick Jr. as Clerk Preston Churchill as Treasurer and trustees Leslie Griffin John Fielding Mrs Sarah Haigh Edward Lane Eugene Whittier Frederick Duncan Sidney Blandford and Cornelius Leary. Blandford presided in Griffin’s absence. Reports were presented and executive committee appointment postponed pending president’s decision.
The General Republican Council elected officers led by Edwin M. Howard. Charles R. Bennison became Election Committee chairman, Dorothy M. Moriaty secretary, Francis T. Lithgow treasurer, and Arthur W. Gibby Campaign Fund Committee chair. Committee work continued with reports due February 5.
A dust storm resembling a desert scene swept Ingleside Park and nearby Centre area on Tuesday evening. A north wind blew dry white sand over Pauline Street, reducing visibility to near zero as mud dried from last year was blown about.
The Anti Tubercular Clinic conducted annually by the Massachusetts Board of Health will be continued in Winthrop Schools for seventh ninth and eleventh graders. Tests begin Thursday February 11 with hoped for parent cooperation to have pupils tested as a health safeguard.
Twenty five senior high school girls collected for flood relief on Saturday from seven AM to one PM at multiple town stations under Red Cross direction. Mrs. Floyd oversaw comfort of workers as a relief committee chair. Donations were generous and Winthrop is believed to meet the $2,000 quota.
The Town Clerk announces registration dates for Winthrop residents voting in the annual March town election. Precinct 1 meets February 15 at Town Hall. Precinct 2 and 5 February 9 at Pauline Street High School. Precinct 3 February 11 at Shirley Street School. Precinct 4 February 17 at Highland School. All precincts have final registration February 24 at Town Hall. Evenings 7 30 to 9 00 p m, final day 12 Noon to 10 p m.
Winthrop urged stronger efforts in the 1937 Greater Boston Community Fund campaign as the city stood at 48.45 percent of its $4 160 000 quota. Community chairman Charles A Hagman urged workers to fund flood relief for the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys and support the Metropolitan Red Cross. Cities in the Boston Metropolitan Chapter include Arlington Boston Belmont Brookline Canton Chelsea Dedham Dover Everett Medfield Millis Norwood Revere Sharon Watertown Westwood Woburn. Contributions may be sent to Greater Boston's campaign at 70 Federal Street Boston or to the Community Chairman.
The Winthrop Taxpayers' Association elected temporary officers at a Board of Directors meeting. Leslie K. Griffin named temporary president with Frank K. Hatfield as 1st vice president and S. Lawrence Burgher as 2nd vice president. Other officers include John W. Fielding secretary T. Gilbert Hetherington treasurer and Fred I. Crocker chairman of the board. The board may grow from nine to twenty one and dues were set at one dollar yearly. A membership drive and upcoming Osborne Hall meeting were announced.
A large attendance at the Richard F. Metcalf Post VFW meeting last Thursday witnessed Comrade Lawrence F. Quigley, Commandant of the Massachusetts Soldiers Home in Chelsea, receive the Obligation of Honorary Membership. Comrade Martinetti presided, then Henry V. O Day conferred the obligation, congratulating Quigley on affiliation with the Veterans of Foreign Wars. O Day lauded the Post for its prompt reports and correspondence.
The Young Men's Republican Club will hold its third annual banquet and officer election at the Cliff House on Tuesday evening February 16 at 6 30. Candidates endorsed by Republican groups are expected to speak. Robert E Kirby chairs the ticket committee and reports strong ticket sales. Tickets are available from club members. the general public is invited.
The Advisory Committee of the Town of Winthrop Massachusetts records the passing of Elmer E. Dawson on January 7. He served on the Board of Selectmen General Court representative and as Advisory Committee chair with commitment to public welfare. A copy of the resolution is to be delivered to his family. Edward R. Thomas secretary January 29 1937. The Teachers Association of the local schools held its regular monthly meeting on Monday evening.
