Smith Rescues Boy From Ice Near Wharf
Benjamin P. Smith of Pauline Street rescued Edward Dunn who fell through ice near the United States Quartermaster Wharf. Smith battled deep water in heavy clothing to bring the boy to shore and seek medical help from Dr. Porter. The rescue underscored Smith as a Winthrop Fire Department member and local baggage master.

Thornton Station Robbery Reported by Patrolman
Patrolman Walter George found the Thornton Station ticket office safe missing after an early Friday break in. Tracks show the safe moved across the tracks to the waterside. A small box and drawer change were left untouched. Supt. John Sullivan ordered the safe removed to the station.
