Beach Section Damaged by Three Day Storm and High Tide
Winthrop shore line from Winthrop Highlands to Point Shirley suffered extreme damage during a three day storm with a 15-foot tide and high winds. The Sea Wall broke at Shore Drive, railroad tracks washed out, many Beach sections flooded, and thousands of tons of rocks and debris piled on Shore Drive causing nearly 100 million dollars in damage across streets and homes. A deserted Winthrop house on Sewall avenue caught fire early Monday. Fire Chief Warren Belcher and crew found a 12 by 6 foot still in the cellar, a condenser piping to attic vats, and a gallon can half full of alcohol. No occupants were found. police were notified after the blaze was extinguished.
