Winthrop aims to raise 2500 dollars in the Community Fund Drive during the first week. Supt. of Schools Arthur E. Boudreau leads the Winthrop division as they concentrate efforts toward the goal, hoping to reach it on or before Tuesday February 6.
Daniel Foley of 97 Lowell Road writes in Open Forum for a cooperative Winthrop bus line to Boston via the Sumner Tunnel with a seven cent fare. The plan envisions non profit earning stock at twenty five dollars per family and promises practical service from Winthrop to Haymarket or Adams Square, addressing transportation after the Narrow Gauge ceased operations and a high seven cent fare vision amid protest over a ten cent bus fare.
The town faces higher transit costs under a new 20 cent per way Boston schedule. With 2,500,000 riders annually, residents pay about $500,000 more than the old Narrow Gauge route, costing at least $125,000 more per year after shifts in travel patterns. Real estate experts warn the higher fares could dampen local property interest and family budgets face about $200 extra yearly per household.
The Department of Public Utilities issues a temporary 60 day license to the Saugus Transit Company for bus service between Winthrop and Maverick Station East Boston. A ten cent fare to East Boston, then ten more to Boston, totals twenty cents one way. Routes include Winthrop bridge to Main Street and back with fifteen designated stops inside Winthrop.
Winthrop fund headquarters report 72 percent of the quota, $1800 raised toward a $2500 goal. Solicitors are expected to file final reports over the weekend to reach the target.
Chairman Cotton of the Department of Public Utilities met with the Winthrop Board of Selectmen and town counsel to discuss establishing a direct bus line from Winthrop through Revere to Lynn. They also urged rethinking the current 20 cent one way fare to Boston, noting Winthrop residents pay about 150000 dollars more annually under the present system.
