Christmas Baskets For 113 Families In Winthrop

The Winthrop Unemployment Committee distributed 113 Christmas baskets valued at about 565 dollars with actual cost 213 dollars due to extensive donations. Each basket included pork, potatoes, squash, fruit, canned goods, dairy, eggs, and flour. The effort involved the Red Cross, merchants, school children, and town departments in a community-wide drive.

Santa Claus Visits Winthrop Lights Up Christmas

Santa Claus visited Winthrop on Christmas Eve drawn in a sleigh by reindeers with auto escorts and red flares. The town’s decorations spread from Mr Bennison’s home to streets, churches, the town hall and library, showcasing extensive holiday illuminations and festive spirit.

Street Department Hires 150 For Short Christmas Work

Over 150 men were employed by the Street Department under Supt T J Mahaney for a few days last week to clear snow from streets and gutters. Payment planned for Friday to fund holiday cheer with funds up to a thousand dollars in relief or bonuses.

Course In Music Opens January 10

Citizens of Winthrop may attend eight lectures on The Music of Many Nations starting Tuesday January 10 1933 at Winthrop Senior High School from 4 00 to 545 P M under the University Extension Course plan Massachusetts Department of Education. A nominal fee of 4 for auditors and 5 for credit students will be charged. Lectures will be given by Margaret Bakeman Wing.

One Man Cars to Run on Narrow Gauge Lines

Announcement says one man cars will operate on the Narrow Gauge, first on the Winthrop line during late night hours when traffic is light. The car, recently purchased from the Eastern Street Railway, has been converted for operation on the narrow gauge rails at the local road.

Thieves Steal Stock Valued At $1000 From Boston Car

Thieves on Monday night stole a travelling bag containing about $1000 in stocks from the automobile of John Metcalf on Harbor View avenue near the Hotel Vendome in Boston. The bag held nine shares of CeeReT a REQLGESS, Radin: Corporation of America, 21 shares of Standard Brands, 190 shares of Kreu ger & Toll, and 10 shares of Consolidated Oil.

Breakwater meeting set for Winthrop Shore area

Citizens invited to a town hall hearing room meeting on Tuesday January 3 called by Rep Clancy to discuss organizing and proposing legislation for Winthrop's 25000 state funded breakwater share. The March town meeting will decide expenditure and the sum must be paid to the State before construction begins.

Man Leaps From Ferryboat Into Harbor

An unidentified middle aged man leaped from a narrow gauge ferry into the harbor on Tuesday morning. Harbor police and ferry crew conducted a search for about three quarters of an hour before deciding to abandon the effort at daybreak. Passengers described him as well dressed.

School Teacher Miss Clintie Emery Dies Suddenly

Miss Clintie A Emery longtime third grade teacher in Winthrop and South Lyndeboro New Hampshire died suddenly at her home Wednesday after returning from Christmas holidays. She taught in Winthrop since 1896 and was highly regarded by students and colleagues. She is survived by a brother Harley E Emery of South Lyndeboro. Funeral held Friday at 2 pm in South Lyndeboro with burial there.

Winthrop Chief's Helmet Stolen During Rescue

A Winthrop Fire Department chief and a regular firefighter were assisting a local doctor to revive a woman overcome by gas when the chief's white helmet and another firefighter's helmet were stolen. Police and fire crews were summoned. the injured woman regained consciousness with inhalator aid and is expected to recover.
