A letter from Santa to Mr and Mrs Charles R Bennison confirms Santa will tour Winthrop Monday evening December 24 with prancing reindeer before his late night rounds. Adults and children can see him as he passes through streets prior to delivering presents.
The Winthrop unemployment committee plans to deliver just over 100 Christmas baskets. The committee’s list is still being prepared with details continued on page 8.
The Community Carol Singers urge town residents to gather on the steps of the Methodist Episcopal Church for a grand carol sing on Christmas Eve at 10 00 oclock.
Citizens in Winthrop are urged to join Christmas Eve caroling under the direction of Robert A. Walsh and Horace A. Edwards. Groups from churches and clubs will sing to shut‑ins, meeting Monday at 7 30 p m at the Methodist Church side entrance. Transportation and car arrangements will be provided. volunteers to assist may contact Messrs Walsh and Edwards by Ocean numbers.
Edward G Richardson longtime Boston journalist and former Planning Board chairman died at his home 25 Orlando Avenue after a short illness. Born Roxbury February 7 1871 he spent 25 years with the Boston Evening Transcript and served as City Hall reporter. He later became principal assessor of Boston and later moved into life insurance before his death at home.
At the December Red Cross Executive Board meeting J A Knudson presented the officer slate for the coming year. Elected were Mrs Elizabeth Floyd as chairman Ex Fernald as vice chairman Mrs Fairfax W Proctor as secretary and Preston B 2 as treasurer. Mrs Mary Hollster Dutch retired as secretary after six years and was elected board member for three years. New secretary Mrs Proc tor was welcomed and assured support. Roll Call progress and precinct chairman efforts were praised with members extending membership opportunities.
Winthrop Commandery and Parkman Commandery of East Boston will hold their annual Christmas observance at the Masonic Hall on Merianigan Street. Eminent Commanders Edwin A Holmes and Fred Alexander, with past leaders, will present bestowals and responses. social hour runs 11 pm to 12 noon before the ceremony. All Sir Knights and visiting members are invited.
The town’s second radio broadcast on WMEX will air Saturday evening from 8 30 to 9 00 with a Christmas musical ensemble and carol singers. Olive Cronin Phylis Edwards readings Paul Scott Santa Claus will attend Winthrop String Ensemble performers Hester Bradshaw Reed and others. Hundreds listened last Friday and letters praised the program.
An eligible list of nine for Winthrop police appointments was set by the state civil service commission after a exam on October 13. The nine passing candidates, in order, are Francesco Perrone Theodore S Kaiserpaut V Abely Jee J Whalen David Kurland John Kelley Richard E Cox Sidney H Taller and Walter S Marson.
The Board of Selectmen and Chief of Police Pumphret conducted a Saturday inspection of Winthrop cafes and restaurants serving malt beverages. The visit aimed to ensure compliance with sanitation and equipment rules before license renewals on January 1.
