Campaign appeals for Boston area Community Fund drive

January 25 to February 9 marks the Community Fund drive in Metropolitan Boston. Santa Claus to Visit Winthrop on Christmas Eve

A Santa letter to Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Bennison announces Santa Claus and his reindeer will visit Winthrop on Christmas Eve Thursday December 24. Residents are urged to be good so Santa will call at their homes with toys and gifts.

Over 200 town officials and friends gathered at the Elks clubhouse to honor Lieut. Louis M. Donovan of the local police department on his promotion to lieutenant. The event featured speeches praising his courage and duty, a gold wrist watch and bouquet for the honoree, and musical entertainment by Donald S. McLeod and William H. Barker.

Thieves Break Into Two Stores Sunday Morning

Thieves, by jimmying windows, broke into Gordon G Fullerton Inc and Centre Drug Company early Sunday December 13. At Fuller ton they took 12 batteries 12 winter fronts and 5 car heaters, while Centre Drug is said to have liquor and drugs. Patrolman Whalen spotted the open office door about 2 am and alerted headquarters as the culprits escaped. Police pursue leads and expect to catch them.

Police are inspecting all-day and long-term car parking around the Centre on Woodside Avenue Bartlett Road and Somerset Avenue to keep traffic moving and ease crowded conditions during business hours.

Petition Seeks Home Rule for Revere and Winthrop Officials

A petition filed Monday with the House clerk requests that Revere City Council and Winthrop Selectmen be authorized to act as county commissioners in their communities, relieving Middlesex County commissioners of authority. Although Revere and Winthrop are in Suffolk county, Boston City Council serves as county commissioners for Boston and Chelsea.

Gibson to Return Home for Christmas and Winter Trip

Mr. Howard A. Gibson of 44 Shore Drive, a hospital patient, will go home this week for Christmas. In January, Mr. and Mrs. Gibson will depart for Florida to spend the winter months.

Winthrop Selectmen Approve 3 of 4 Package Store Licenses

The Winthrop Board of Selectmen granted three package goods licenses for all alcoholic beverages on Monday. Swett Market at 3 and 7 Somerset Avenue, Crest Cash Market at 29A Crest Avenue, and Winthrop Quality Meat Shop at 402 Winthrop Street received approvals. A fourth license was still under consideration amid over 80 applications.

Santa Claus Visit Planned Tomorrow

Children and grandchildren under 10 of Cottage Park Yacht Club members can meet Santa Claus Saturday at 2 30 p m at the clubhouse. Ice cream will follow the visit. The club also plans another New Year's Eve party for December 31 at the clubhouse.
