Winthrop Junior High Sells Safe Driving Course For Students

Winthrop Junior High hosts a motor traffic class titled Highway Patrol with 70 students meeting Mondays under Miss Regina McCaffrey and Mr. Wallace McLean. The course aims to teach traffic rules, safety, and citizen responsibility ahead of hoped licenses, as students discuss road law and driving practices.

WPA Snow Removal Projects Ban Limits Local Use

WPA will not fund snow removal as a WPA function though local governments may request WPA workers paid by the community. Workers can be temporary and return to WPA roles after snow work ends. If truck shortages arise, WPA rented trucks may be released for snow removal with rental covered by the local agency.

Rev Malcolm Taylor, noted leader of youth conferences and secretary of the Province of New England, will preach at the 11 a.m. service at St John’s Episcopal Church. He directs the Concord Conference at St Paul’s School near Concord New Hampshire. Members of St John’s Young People’s Fellowship will attend as a group to greet him.

Memorial Service At Winthrop Elks

The Winthrop Lodge of Elks will hold memorial services for deceased brothers next Sunday December 6. Exalted Ruler John H. Egan issued a special invitation to relatives of the departed and to local military and social organizations to join in the exercises.

Victory Dinner For Democrats Planned After Landslide

A large victory dinner for Democrats was organized with William H. Walsh as chairman and an executive committee including Miss Ursula Muldoon and George C Jenkins. Sub-chairmen span arrangements tickets publicity reception music and speakers. The event is set for Thursday December 3 at Ellis Hall with tickets via committee members.

Town Meeting To Be Held Monday

A special town meeting is set for Monday evening December 7 in the Junior High gym to consider four warrant articles. Three call for substantial appropriations for WPA projects Welfare and Old Age Assistance, while a fourth relates to a change sought by Pittesses. The $10,000 for Selectmen is expected to cover projects through March, with about $10,000 unspent from prior WPA funds. The Board urges full attendance to ensure a quorum and complete business.

Wells Brothers Escape Serious Injury In Car Crash

John Wells and his brother George Wells narrowly escaped serious injuries when their car skidded on icy roads in New London Connecticut and overturned while returning to Washington D C after a Thanksgiving visit. The car was badly damaged and the occupants suffered severe shakings and returned home.

Over 30 Applications Filed Here For Package Store Licenses In Winthrop

The Winthrop Board of Selectmen has received over 30 applications for the four state licensed package stores allowed by population. The ABC Commission ruled no separate licenses for wine and malt beverages, and drugstores may apply for liquor in package form but at the same license fee as package stores. If all nine local drugstores apply, up to thirteen licenses could be issued, though no decision has been made yet.

Anniversary Services At Union Congregational Church

Next Sunday marks the anniversary of Rev. R E Gilmore's coming as pastor at Union Congregational Church. The day includes an organ concert at 10 30 a m a morning service with an anniversary sermon titled A Preacher's Pardonable Pride and a 7 p m musical evening service with many choirs. Members will be received and children baptized in the morning as new carpet and hymnals are noted.

A mass meeting of all Protestant churches in Winthrop will be at First Church on Friday December 4 at 8 00 PM with Dr Henry Louis Henroid of Geneva Switzerland as speaker. Choirs from Union Congregational and First Church will sing and town ministers will take part.

Elks Lodge Speakers Highlight Somerville Visit
