New Spotlight Illuminates World War Monument

A crowd of World War veterans and town officials watched at 8 40 PM as a new spotlight on the Library grounds illuminated the World War Monument. The lighting, installed with wiring by Suburban Gas and Electric Company and coordinated with Library Trustees and the Board of Selectmen, will shine nightly in the early evening. Also noted is Melvin Crouse of 40 Cottage Park Road returning from a March to China.

Yachtsmen Prep For Labor Day Regatta At Winthrop

Eastern New England focuses on Winthrop for a three day Labor Day regatta. Over 185 sail boats are entered as outer Winthrop and Cottage Park Yacht Clubs sponsor races starting August 31. The schedule calls for events on August 31 and September 1 with more details continued on Page 8.

Keenan Elected Treasurer of Columbia Trust Company

Brendan J. Keenan former Winthrop selectman and East Boston native was chosen treasurer of the Columbia Trust Company of East Boston. The vacancy arose after Alfred E. Wellington became president. Keenan born 1873, son of Henry and Mary Keenan, married Louise Sullivan in East Boston on October 12, 1897.

Rates To Change For Local Motorists Based On 1927 28

A public hearing is set for September 9 at 10 30 AM in the Gardner Auditorium State House on a proposed 1929 1930 rate schedule for motorists based on 1927 1928 experience. Winthrop faces lower rates while Chelsea Revere and Boston may see increases. The plan classifies towns into territories with different rates and groups cars by price class.
