World telephone totals on January 1 1928 show the United States with 18 522 767 lines about 60 percent of the global tally. Europe holds 8 623 407 lines about 28 percent of world total with the rest scattered elsewhere. In 1927 global telephones rose by 1 583 743 with about half of the increase in the United States.
The church foundation in Metcalf square rapidly nears completion and fundraising proceeds. Of pledges, 407 have paid in full and 97 owe nothing yet. $51,000 has been received toward a $60,000 goal by September 1, signaling likely full attainment.
The Winthrop and Cottage Park Yacht Clubs sponsor a three day regatta expected to draw thousands. Labor Day races off Crystal Bay may set new four mile course records with about thirty to fifty speed boats competing under the Quincy Speed Boat Association.

Miss Frances L. Brown of 68 Fowler Street Dorchester lost a purse containing $20, a gold wrist watch and a chauffeur's license when a thief pushed his hand through an open window of a Narrow Gauge car at Orient Heights station Tuesday. Two men on the car pursued the thief into Bennington Street East Boston but he escaped half a mile away.
