Winthrop officials report the current year's tax rate at $20.90 up from $19.70 last year, driven by state increases. Board of Assessors chair Edward Freeman notes a slow Legislature has delayed full listings but promises a complete report soon. Population stands at 12,631 with 4069 polls. real estate gains total $44,200 and personal property $64,350, plus six new buildings this year.
Francis Juggins of the law firm Wilson Juggins Murphy a Winthrop resident at 62 Lowell Road is asked to enter the Republican race for Suffolk County District Attorney. Backers in legal business and social circles press for his candidacy, noting his role as senior counsel for Herman L. Barney in the recent Suffolk County trial and his standing in Republican ranks.
Five boys of the Machine Gun Company have applied to the Red Cross Home Service Committee for employment. They seek the best available posts with a real future. Citizens of Winthrop are urged to report any openings in Winthrop, Boston, or nearby areas to Leon C. Guptil, Chairman, Red Cross Home Service Committee, Town Hall, Winthrop. Telephone Winthrop 621.
The Winthrop Historical Committee appeals to local organizations to submit accurate reports of their war activities over the past two years. Letters urge typewritten, verifiable details on funds raised, items made, meetings and services, plus real contributions to the war effort since entry.
Winthrop hosts a second Victory Pageant at Fort Banks to aid the Army Relief Society caring for widows and orphans of fallen soldiers. The production features Maude Murray as Liberty and strong turns by Marion Molloy, Miss Handlin, Miss Chamberlain, and others, with D A Ives leading the band and Chief McNeill coordinating police protection for 7,000 attendees. A few prize moments include Miss Molloy’s butterfly numbers and the Red Cross tableaux.
August 9 1919 a Fort Banks note expresses gratitude to the Army Relief Society and the Winthrop community for supporting Mr Whorf’s America in the World War pageant. The writer names Mr Whorf first and thanks participants on committees and attendees for their efforts and the resulting fund for the society.
