The Winthrop Woman's Club met April 16 in Bikes Hall presided by Nellie B Griffin. The program featured Mrs. Mary P. Callard introducing MacGregor Jenkins whose talk "Literature with a Large L" traced literature from prehistoric times to today and critiqued modern writing while promoting interpretation and pleasure in reading.
A past fire chief condemns residents who set outdoor fires, noting unlawful open burning requires payment of costs or prosecution. He cites a Boston grass fire on Commonwealth avenue, urges officials to foster public fear of open fires, and commends Winthrop Fire Chief Tewksbury for his stance.

Chief William McNeill appoints Russell F. Floyd of 36 Center Street as a clerk at Police Headquarters. Floyd recently returned from four months in army hospitals in France after being wounded twice with the 23rd Infantry. He joined the regiment in Syracuse in 1917 and sailed overseas in September 1917, fighting in all battles the 2nd Division took part in.
An injured officer from Lovell France who lost a leg below the knee has returned to duty in the United States. He has been in hospitals in New York New Jersey and Washington DC fitted with an artificial limb. He assists as clerk telephonist and on street duty aiding Chief McNeill in a new police card index system and ambulance operations.
