Town treasurer Harry W Aiken says Newton Abbe Company of Boston will fund a 100000 loan for rebuilding Shirley Street school. The loan runs fifteen years at 2 percent with a 520 premium, yielding 100520 to the town on notes of 100000.
Frank J. McQueeney, a local contractor, was awarded the contract to furnish granolithic sidewalks in Winthrop by the Board of Selectmen at its weekly meeting Monday evening. About $2500 is expected to be spent on the sidewalk construction.
General Chairman George W. Downie of the Boy Scout Fund Campaign announces the formation of the Finance Committee and lists Edward A. Barclay Edward R. Clarke Arthur H. Curtis as members for the drive to aid the Boy Scouts of Witthrop plus a planned campaign period from April 30 to May 11.
Winthrop residents are warned of a new Board of Health regulation restricting poultry keeping without written permits. Each permit must state the number sex and kind of poultry allowed. The rule takes effect May 1 1936.
The Rev. Harry Belmont Hill of First Church of Winthrop was reappointed Monday to lead the local church, starting his second year. He is a North Carolina native trained at an unspecified institution as the annual Methodist Episcopal meeting in Melrose, Massachusetts concluded.
Henry J. Barry secretary of the Advisory Committee is a patient at Faulkner Hospital Boston undergoing a thorough physical examination. He entered last Thursday and expects to stay about two weeks. Friends are glad he is resting comfortably and making rapid strides toward recovery.
Local yachtsmen plan a grand opening day dinner and dance for 1936 hosted by the Massachusetts Bay Yacht Clubs Association at the Hotel Bradford on Saturday April 11. The event, historically stag, will include ladies this year and features a full evening of dining and dancing with reservations urged to avoid disappointment. The guest of honor is Hon. Saltonstall.
Boston College Musical Clubs travel to Winthrop on May 7 to perform a concert and dance at Elks Hall under the Winthrop Catholic Woman's Club. Over one hundred boys participate in the event.
Commodore George J. Hamilton of the Pleasant Park Yacht Club announces the regular Friday Bingo Party will be eliminated on Friday April 17th due to Good Friday and will resume weekly only until further notice.
Col. Thomas F. Sullivan of the Boston transit department testified at a legislative transportation committee hearing opposing a bill that would authorize rapid transit extension by the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad into East Boston. He suggested land interests may be involved and stated he acted on Mayor Mansfield’s instruction to oppose the measure.
Justin Cronin son of Eugene and Mrs Cronin of Washington avenue has been appointed assistant statistician at Hornblower Weeks Company Boston. At twenty four he was born in this town and educated locally then Boston College class of 1933 with AB. He started as a Boston stock exchange page before joining the firm.
Mr. and Mrs. William P. Natalie of 37 Sunnyside Avenue celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a turkey dinner on Tuesday evening April 7. Relatives and friends sent money flowers and cards. Mrs Natalie was honored earlier at a Rebekah Sewing Circle luncheon with a purse of money and flowers.
Pilot William R Tanner of the Boston and Maine Central Vermont Airways was killed when the plane he was testing made a forced landing and nosed over in a field near Burlington Vermont. Hoyt Gilmore, a Burlington mechanic, survived. Tanner, a six year pilot and former Curtiss-Wright instructor, lived at 26 Lincoln Street Winthrop and held the rank of lieutenant.
