On Worth Street a third man tries to persuade the first to buy an overcoat, sparking a confrontation and a self condemning exchange about street hustlers.
A compendium of colonial life details notes debt imprisonment in a Connecticut mine turned prison, a lone hat factory, Virginia housing mass population, horse-drawn travel between New York and Boston, no public libraries, costly books, Christmas games with kissing penalties, low wages, fines for street gallops, quaint goods terms, open fireplaces, long journeys, unnamed streets, theatre pits, whipping posts, Atlantic book flows, slow mail, tea etiquette, romance novels, baking tests, wills before distant journeys.
A 19th century patent medicine advertisement promises Cascarets Candy Cathartic as a sure cure for constipation sluggish liver biliousness and related illnesses. It claims guaranteed relief or money refunded and offers sample booklets with low price points.
Eggs intended for hatching should not be kept over four weeks. They must be turned every day or two to ensure proper development and viability.
Advertisement touts One Minute Cough Cure as an infallible remedy for coughs colds croup and throat and lung troubles from The Wheat Drug Co urging readers to heed warnings and seek relief.

The 1898 Al manac of Prof Srl R Hicks is larger than prior issues with 116 pages and fine illustrations. It promises storm, flood and drought forecasting and includes Word and Works features, sold with a paper at 1 a year and almanac premium for 25 cents. The publisher is Word and Works Po Co, 2201 Locust St, St. Louis Mo.
An old Toledo advertisement offers one hundred dollars reward for an incurable catarrh case and promotes Hall's Catarrh Cure as an internal remedy. It names F J Cheney Co as proprietors and lists endorsements from West & Truax Walding Kinman Marvin druggists. Price 75 cents per bottle.
Nat Goodwin quarrels over a $50 bill with a German landlord at a tavern. He angrily declares the principle matters, then burns a $30 check to prove his point while the host stamps the bill and signs, muttering about the trickster actors.
An exchange notes the fabled Bluebeard is based on fact, identifying Gilles de Retz Lord of Retz in Brittany during Charles VII’s era. He was said to be the era’s wealthiest and wickedest man, burned December 23 1440 for murdering multiple wives and at least 100 children.
Grosbeck Tex reader J M Thirlwend says two Little Early Risers at night cure his indigestion and morning sluggishness. He claims thousands share this cure and asks if you do too.
The November Outlook issue features H W Mabie praising Alfred Tennyson’s memoirs as the year’s premier literary work. The article is accompanied by portraits from the book and a Watts portrait, with the publication details listed. Eggs are heavier in Northern countries than in Southern.
During hunting season from October 1, 1897 to March 31, 1898 the N and W railroad will transport dogs free in baggage cars when accompanied by owner and at owner risk, one dog per man. Owners must show tickets to agents for proper way-billing and provide chains to secure dogs in baggage cars. After March 31, 1898 regular dog tariff applies.
