Local notes report a Confederate Veterans camp to be organized at Luray. Winchester Presbytery meets in Charlestown April 21. Various town happenings include repairs, shipments, church improvements, and community arrivals and departures.
Miss Meta Russell visits Middletown while many residents travel to nearby towns. The report lists numerous visits and returns, including Mr. W Roy Stephenson heading to Philadelphia, Mrs. Lizzie Logan from Parkersburg, and the Fergussons returning home. Several locals plan moves, such as Geo Funkhouser family leaving for Danville Pa, with best wishes from The Times.
Tragic death of Thos E Grim at his Harrisonburg home reported from Winchester. A native of Winchester he was a watchmaker by trade and had married Florence Dean. He shot himself in the head with a .38 revolver amid family illness and unemployment, his demise confirmed by dispatches and burial arrangements in Winchester.
Mr J Randolph Graham son of Rev Dr Graham completed examinations at Missouri Medical College St Louis tying for top marks with nearly a hundred rivals achieving 997-10 percent. Miss Sallie Cline near Bartville seriously hurt when barn door blew off striking her and a cow during milking. Ada Seabright Savage and Ralph Savage remarried in Baltimore after an earlier divorce. they plan to live in Clarke County. R L Gray of the city received a banquet menu card from the Banner Class at Linden Street Christian Church Memphis. son Walter L Gray served as president and toastmaster. Dennis Shehan property north of Berryville sold at public auction for 802 to Gen Chas Thurman for tenant use on Chaumiere estate.
Last Friday night both fire companies held their monthly meetings with routine business. A ten member committee led by Captain Gray will report on repairing and enlarging the engine house. A request for more time on a hose wagon study was granted. Members approved bonds paid off and authorized release deeds. Two new members were elected and gum coats procured. A seven member loan exhibition committee was formed to plan an art exhibit an historical collection and a museum of curiosities to benefit the company.

A reporter found the facility complete and convenient with up to date bottling appliances. The Cumberland beer will be exclusively handled for its purity and mildness, ideal for family use.
Scoxoon Board of Education met in regular session in the council chamber with E Holmes Boyd presiding. Enrollment lists show 508 pupils in John Kerr Public Schools and 179 in the colored school with 157.53 average daily attendance. reports praised condition with minor improvements suggested and ventilators to be installed in basement rooms. The board backed truancy enforcement and approved suspensions for truancy.
Mr. Jno Clark a cripple of Philadelphia traveled to Winchester to promote a publishing house. He recalls a shipwreck off Newfoundland that left him with both legs amputated below the knees and many fingers lost, now aiding his life with cork limbs and crutches.
An old fashion remedy pitch praises DeWitts Little Early Risers for constipation and biliousness as Wheat Drug Company markets them. The Free Press notes Harrisonburg Guards receiving government war supplies and an open order to apply for items needed for service. The Democratic Executive Committee outlined a municipal primary for May 26 with officers to be elected. The plan includes 8 a m to 8 p m voting at the Court House on April 15 1898, four judges and two clerks, and ballots printed under committee direction. Candidacy notices due April 11 6 p m to the committee. Judges by ward and ballot instructions listed.
J G Wright of Slauson and Wright insurance Roanoke was found dead in his bed at Judkins House Christiansburg on April 1. He had become intoxicated, fell downstairs, fought with Frank Jackson, and died hours later from congestion of the brain after inquest. Jackson was exonerated. Wright had recently visited Winchester for business and met with Phil Gold.
Joseph Hable a former Winchester resident and brother of S H Hable died in Baltimore after falling fifty feet down an elevator shaft. He was with M H Lauchheimer Sons in clothing manufacturing. He reportedly pulled the rope to move the elevator and was crushed after hitting the basement floor.
The report notes Harper's Ferry to Strasburg Junction shipped 1108 carloads of grain flour hay and apples while Harrisburg to Lexington moved 1040 carloads. The Valley division sent more grain and flour but less hay and apples. B and O also had a strong merchandise year. Dr Charles W Chancellor of Baltimore will organize a West Virginia based company to build a new hotel on the Berkeley Springs site of the recent fire. He secures an 86 year lease from West Virginia and plans a 150000 dollar building with 50000 dollars for baths and a modern sanitarium plus a bottling plant to market the spring water.
A testimonial from Eva Moss of White Hall Virginia praises Hood's Sarsaparilla for restoring strength and health after severe illness. She notes her brother could not walk far and lacked energy but now can work a full day on the farm. She adds Hood's Pinus as the only pills to take with the remedy.
Richmond papers note Mr R R Fauntleroy spent days in the capital. He argued a case before the Supreme Court and met the Governor on behalf of Alexander Weathers sentenced to two years in Frederick County. He seeks commutation to six months in jail.

The valued riding stallion Young Spendthrift, owned by G. W. Levi of Berryville Virginia, was tied to a tree on Levi’s farm when it became restive. After several attempts to break loose the horse plunged against the bridle bit breaking both lower jaws. Unable to feed the animal, Levi was forced to shoot the horse.
JOHN notes Ramsburg’s as the best value shop for tobacco in town. He praises Ramsburg’s 25 and 30 ers as hard to beat for price and quality.

Obituary notes Anna Belle Lemley of Stephens City died at home with funeral at 10 a m Friday April 1. A separate item reports failed hold ups near Pine Hills where Edw Helvestine repelled a horse and escaped. Chas B Rouss comments on war impact saying Spain would not wage war with Japan sized population and Cuba valued at 200 million. no war expected.
A Zanesville man, whose home flooded a week earlier, shot himself in front of family, ending his suffering but leaving his relatives to bear the tragedy. The act is described as both selfish and foolish, with no clear explanation offered by authorities.
