Charleston February 21 A special session of the West Virginia Legislature is likely to address the Virginia debt issue. A resolution proposes convening urgently if the U S Supreme Court mandamus judgment affects the legislature while sessions are not in progress. The body contemplates abeyance until the court rules. The House debated the good roads bill amid many amendments. The Senate rejected a motion to reconsider a transportation bill and passed measures on sand mine inspections and the San Jose scale. General appropriation bills were introduced in both houses.
Shippers hope to bond goods to Europe as American Line vessels from New York sail hours after assurances of immediate departures. Crews of the St. Louis and three other liners including New York, St. Paul, and Kronland are largely paid off while large consignment shipments are removed from the St. Louis cargo. El Paso Feb 21 Major General John J Pershing receives a message from Major General Hugh L Scott announcing his appointment as commander of the southern department to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Major General Frederick Funston. The formal announcement marks a transition in U S Army leadership in the region.
The West Virginian announces a novel voting campaign for Fairmont readers. Each coupon counts 100 votes, with daily changing numbers and a chance to earn 5000 extra votes for any consecutive five coupons. The scheme promotes women’s suffrage and applies to all voters regardless of status.
The Monongahela Valley Traction Company will site a million dollar byproduct gas and coke plant near Fairmont using Baxter mine coal for gas production. Sanderson and Porter of New York study local sites to place the plant in Fairmont proper, with two months of investigation. Coke produced will be shipped to nearby factories for gun wheel and other needs, minimizing transport distances.
A number of out of town and local residents received care at Cook Hospital this week. Names include Mrs. Claude Tennant of Huntington, Mildred Boden, Miss Helen Guseman of Jane Lew, Miss Gladys Rowe of Monongah, Mrs. J J Barbe near Rivenville, and Mrs. John Murray of Watson. Bell Telephone lineman E G Prichard was treated and discharged. J W Welsh and Arthur Brown were among other patients. The Monon Valley Traction Company ordered three hundred coal cars from Pullman Chicago for delivery, boosting coal transport capacity and fleet for state rail service.
Halifax Nova Scotia February 21 British authorities confiscate sound recordings and related materials found in a German official’s possession returning from the United States aboard the Frade class VIII. They argued the items served German interests, while authorities ruled the records contraband due to potential military use.
A British report states the 1327-ton Dalbenttle collier, built in 1875, was shelled near Gibraltar on a Saturday. Two seamen were on board the ship’s boat and one American crew member, John Guerra of Low Frank Wood, was later reported gravely injured and in distress in the vessel’s boat.
